Shawkat confirmed in a new interview with Vulture that her relationship with Brad Pitt is strictly platonic.
"We're not dating. We're just friends," declared Shawkat. The Search Party actress also addressed her initial reaction to the media's obsession regarding the rumors surrounding the two, calling the public infatuation "uncontrollable."
"All my friends were like 'What's going on?' and sending me photos," said the actress. "I just felt overwhelmed. It's that feeling of being naked in school, like, Oh my God, everyone's looking at me. I've gotten press, but not like that."
Update 3/9/20:
It looks like Brad Pitt and Alia Shawkat's friendship is still going strong. According to TMZ, The two actors were spotted attending a Thundercat concert at The Wiltern in Los Angeles. Per the outlet, Pitt and Shawkat stood side by side for the duration of the show and joined a slew of other A-list guests including Ariana Grande, Beck and Anderson .Paak.

Despite the repeated joint appearances (and high hopes of Arrested Development fans), Alia Shawkat and Brad Pitt are “absolutely just friends,” a source close to to Pitt told People. Even if they aren’t dating, the fact that Shawkat gets to attend art exhibits with the Brad Pitt is quite enviable. In the words of Lucille Bluth, “Good for her!”

Unexpected couple alert! Photographers continue to snap photos of Brad Pitt with actress Alia Shawkat, so the world is understandably wondering if they're now dating.
Lainey Gossip reported on one of the first sightings of Pitt and Shawkat together, after the performers were spotted attending the L.A. on Fire art exhibition at Wilding Cran Gallery in Los Angeles. An eagle-eyed attendee snapped several photos of Pitt and Shawkat chatting in the gallery, and the Arrested Development star shared an Instagram featuring a piece of artwork from the exhibition.
The site also reported on an earlier sighting of the pair, when a paparazzo snapped them leaving a performance of Ethan Coen’s A Play Is a Poem in Los Angeles.
Plus, at the end of October, fellow actor Mike Birbiglia shared a photo of several people, including Pitt and Shawkat, on Instagram. Birbiglia wrote, "These lucky audience members got to take a photo with me. Anything can happen in Los Angeles! 38 more shows!" While Pitt smiled for the selfie, Shawkat appeared to be reading a show program.
Whether or not Pitt and Shawkat are just friends or actually dating is unclear right now, but we can dream.
