Seth Meyers Loves a Smart, Strong Woman! All About His Amazing Wife Alexi Ashe

Seth Meyersloves his wife Alexi Ashe so much that he actually had her sign off on some of the jokes in his Netflix special Lobby Baby, even dedicating an entire section to bits told from her point of view.

"When we were dating, she came to a lot of shows and then the longer we dated, then she started finding her way into the act and then we got married and then she was really a part of the act," he recalled in an interview with Decider. "She would always just sort of comment on how things are really funny, but not entirely fair from her perspective in saying how I was laying it out."

He explained that he knew there are a lot of jokes about marriage from his vantage point, but wanted to give Ashe a voice. "I felt as though those jokes worked, but you just felt like the audience sort of tilt when you switched it, and all of a sudden I feel as though half the audience that was maybe rolling their eyes was now enjoying [it]," he said of the experience. "And it’s really, obviously, it’s fun to end by selling myself out and basically appreciating there is this truth to being a stand-up, which is you get to have the last word, and it was a lot of fun to give it to her."

He added, "She signed off on all those jokes as being very accurate to my shortcomings."

Ashe is a human rights attorney and works pro bono for Sanctuary for Families, "New York’s leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking, and related forms of gender violence." Meyers told YourTango of her work, "My wife works at the Brooklyn D.A.'s office. She's dealing in a far darker world than I am. And she manages to come home and still be bright-eyed and positive. So I have to do the same."

He also told Elleof Ashe's career, "It really takes away my ability to say I had a hard day at work."

How did Seth Meyers and Alexi Ashe meet?

Meyers met Ashe at Chris Kattan's wedding. Ashe's sister, Ariel, worked in the set department at Saturday Night Live. He recalled thinking it was love at first sight, explaining, "I had a sense that she was the closest I'd ever met to someone who I could see myself with. Pretty much right away."

Meyers revealed to Jimmy Fallon in 2013 that he tied his engagement ring for Ashe in a bow around their dog's collar. He admitted he got a little nervous when, the night he planned to propose, Ashe came home from work late. “I just had to sit there looking at the dog," he joked. "I was like, ‘The dog’s going to eat the ring!’”

Meyers and Ashe tied the knot Sept. 1, 2013, at Chickemmoo Farm in Martha's Vineyard. (They had their rehearsal dinner at Beetlebung Farm in Martha's Vineyard—the same farm owned by Amy Schumer's husband, Chris Fischer.) John Mulaney revealed to Vogue that Ashe actually came down with food poisoning two days before the wedding and was actually in the hospital the morning of the big day, but that the Chicago Bears team doctor, Adam Bennett, took care of her and got her feeling good enough to walk down the aisle and celebrate. Brad Paisleyflew in for a surprise performance of the couple's first dance song, "Then."

Do Seth Meyers and Alexi Ashe have kids?

Meyers and Ashe have two sons, one of whom was born in their apartment lobby!

Their first son, Ashe Olsen Meyers, was born in March 2016. Seth revealed that he and Alexi made it to the hospital just 20 minutes before their eldest son's birth.

For their second son, Axel Strahl Meyers, they didn't even have time to get to the hospital at all, and he was born in their apartment lobby!

“I looked at my wife, and the only way I can describe how my wife looked, was she looked like someone who was hiding a baby in a pair of sweatpants,” Meyers recalled of the moment. “We undressed her and the baby was just out. The head of the baby was out. I called 911–this is how fast it happened–I called 911, and over the course of a minute conversation, I basically said, ‘We’re about to have a baby! We’re having a baby! We had a baby.'”

Meyers said that EMTs came just in time to cut Axel's umbilical cord and that their fellow apartment building residents got towels to keep the newborn warm upon his unexpectedly early arrival.

Axel's name has special meaning to the couple: It's a tribute to Alexi's grandparents, who survived the Holocaust and met the day after their concentration camps were liberated by the Allied Powers.

On their fifth wedding anniversary, Seth posted an adorable photo with Alexi and their boys.

"Five years ago today I married my amazing wife Alexi," he wrote. "We’ve since added two incredible boys, neither of whom would take their hands out of their mouths for this picture."
