Product Description
The Alesis Nitro is a complete 8 piece electronic drum kit that includes everything you need to play like a pro.
It features three dynamic 8” tom pads, a 8” dual zone snare drum for great feel and natural response, plus a kick drum pad with pedal. Three 10” cymbals, including a crash with choke, give you a virtually unlimited range of playing expression and the 4 post aluminium mounting rack keeps everything solid and secure.
The setup also includes the powerful Nitro electronic drum module with hundreds of percussion sounds, 40 different kits and 60 built in play along tracks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Nitro drum module connect to a computer?
There is a USB/MIDI connection for use with virtual instruments and recording software. It is class compliant which means that it will work with any modern Mac or PC without the need to download any software or drivers. Also, it features MIDI In and Out ports for connecting directly to standalone MIDI gear. Both connections allow for the passing of MIDI information only.
Can I adjust the levels of the play along tracks?
The included play along tracks can be adjusted in various ways. While the actual key cannot be adjusted, other levels can, such as the volume level, tempo, and click track. Also, the drums can easily be toggled on or off via the DRUM OFF key on the front of the module.
Can I use my own pads with the Nitro module?
While other standard or dual zone single pads will likely work, the Nitro module is configured to respond optimally with the included drum kit. You could potentially use third party standard triggers, however, since other manufacturers design triggers specifically for different drum modules, not all triggers may respond as expected.
Is the Hi Hat pedal a continuous or a switch type pedal?
The Hi Hat pedal included with the Nitro Kit is a continuous variable type pedal. This pedal allows for open, half open, and closed hi hat sounds, and will also allow for “chick” and “splash” sounds when the pedal is pressed down and released without striking the hi hat cymbal pad.

Got it at a very low price; but even if you would pay it 399 as the MSRP advertised, it would be a good purchase.
First of all, this is a cheap drumset; do not expect anything beyond what you pay for; but this does not mean that it is a bad item. It is aimed at first timer, to anyone that wants to try electric drumsets, and to anyone that have fun playing videogames like Rockband, since you can connect this drumset to your console (more on this later on).
The overall setup is pretty simple; there is a module with a ton of cables, each cable goes into one sensor. They are all looking similar, except that 3 are toms, so they have only one hit area (the pad), while one is a snare, so you get the center area and the rim area to hit. Same for the crash, which has 2 hit zones, while the other 2 plates has just one.
Then you have the pedals, one attached to a sensor, which simulate pretty well the kick (it looks solid and it is chain operated), while the other pedal is used to control the hi-hat, so you can use it solo or in conjunction with the hat sensor. The cables are all labelled so can't do any harm.
Everything is set on a structure made of aluminum, from what I can tell. It is pretty solid and you don't need much force to tight the connections. Just be aware that the connectors are made of plastic; so if you take it apart often, you may damage it considerably.
The module is pretty nice; big display and controls are pretty simple. At least the selection of sounds and such. I didn't really feel like assigning new sounds to the various pads, mainly because I use it connected to my computer via USB, and not stand alone, and second because there are a lot of buttons to do a lot of various operations; which may come handy if you hook up a pair of speakers to the output, and use it as stand alone. I didn't buy it for that purpose, so I can't say much about all the various options, beside the sound selection, recording/playback functionalities and the metronome.
There are some songs on the module, that you can play along; nice idea but there is no clear teaching process while you do that, so I would not really consider it useful, for newbies. The module has plenty of connections, you can connect it directly to the AC adapter, or via USB; in which case it is used as Midi device via USB. Then you have 2 midi in/out ports; which are great for connecting other midi instruments, or to connect it to an adapter, so you can use the drumset with a gaming console and play compatible games (like rockband or guitar hero world tour). You need an extra module, since the main module has no wireless connection; but they are cheap and easy to find.
The pads overall are very responsive; I did use it as game controller, and it was pretty good, once you set the delay (since the message goes via Midi, you loose something as lag, but you can set your game sync options to compensate for it). Every pad feel good, and there is not much to say about the quality; since I didn't use it much; but beware that the pads get marks and scuffs when you play it. The pedals are also responsive and fun to use. I didn't play too many real drumsets, but feels about right. This is not a toy for sure.
As standalone, the variety of sounds is pretty good; you can use either a pair of monitor speakers or headphones to hear the sounds. It is not that loud, unless you connect it to an amplifier. Headphones are plenty loud; and the variety of sounds is really good; for a drumset in this price range.
The best though is when connected to a computer. If you have cubase or similar programs, you can drive any instrument (mainly drums, but you can do whatever you like), via the Nitro kit; and it is much better than using buttons or small pads on a keyboard, to play drum parts. Many VST instruments did work right out of the box, no need to configure much.
Overall a great beginner set. I am not planning to do anything out of the random session with my game console or to record some drum parts for my compositions; plus it is kids friendly, so you can use that as first drumset for your kids, and avoid to have noises in your house while they play (the drumset is pretty quiet, but still, you bang on plastic pads, so it is not super silent).
I always wanted to get back at it but the prices of standard drum kits kept me away.
I found the Alesis Nitro, checked out some videos and did some research on other brands before popping on this one, and I am not disappointed.
It is a great kit for the price, with excellent sound and many options to choose from so you can fine tune your drumming style.
I did find the instructions a bit choppy and somewhat vague in spots, but I managed to get it up and going in about 1 1/2 hours.
I'm left handed, and it was easy to move things around and set it up for what works for me.
You can also plug in an MP3 player and play along to your songs. Very cool feature.
Only a few negative points...
1. The headphone jack is 1/8" - the size of a jack found on smartphones and most MP3 players. I had to purchase an adapter in order to use my headphones, of which the jack is 1/4". (I purchased the Sennheiser Cable Adapter Female 1/4" 6.3mm to Male 1/8" 3.5mm Plug from Amazon and it works great)
2. The kit itself is a little short for me - I'm 6'4" tall, so too short to comfortably play for any length of time. I remedied the height issue with a set of Adjustable Bed Risers that can be purchased for less than 20.00 dollars at any big box store or Amazon.
Overall a great kit for anyone who wants to get back into drumming, like myself, and a good start for those up and coming future rock and rollers out
there who can practice to their hearts content without disturbing mom and dad....
My days of being the next Keith Moon or John Bonham may be long gone, but this kit is an excellent way to revisit past drumming skills and hone some new ones...
Rock on....
Top reviews from other countries
The design and disposition of the drums is comfortable and the build quality seems to be sturdy.
I appreciate the kick drum system being the same as an acoustic drum kit.
It has a huge library of sound banks and the system is very editable. The audio quality of the kits is really good and versatile.
The rubber pads make a little more noise than expected and I can still hear them through the headphones whilst playing.
Is it good? Firstly the slightly annoying things - the instruction sheet to put it together could be printed a little better - it's OK but would be better if it were a line art or Lego style instructions as the photos can be hard to read. But this is no problem, got it up anyway.
The kit itself is good, stands up ok, takes a fair beating and with 2 pedals, a kick pad, 4 tom/snare pads and 3 cymbal/ride/hat you really shouldn't complain.
The snare his edge detection, the hi hat and hat pedal work well in conjunction for open/closed hi hat combos. The kick feels good and meaty.
The controller module (from where the sounds come) does feel a bit dated. The basic sounds are excellent drum sounds but there's only so much this box does. Yeah, it has hundreds of sounds but they are not terribly modern of progressive for the main part. Naturally this is easy to solve as I have an old MPC1000 knocking around and this controller module HAS MIDI!!! WOOHOO! Yeah, this was one of the big reasons I picked this kit.
But I'm still not marking it down for any of these things. I'm, frankly, staggered at what you get for your money. Lovely piece of kit, and, most importantly, my children are loving it - absolutely loving it. I hope this is the start of something they keep up for life.
