Some people ruin your Bus experience
I think Big Bus Tours are a good idea to see touristy parts of any city. We enjoyed all the sights, especially crossing of the Golden Gate Bridge! (Caution, if you’re sitting on top, it will get very windy) We decided to ride on the bus for the whole loop (about 2 1/2 hours to see the jest of it) we started late, so we missed the chinatown tour at 1 pm. TIPS: don’t lose the actual ticket they print out for you, or will cost you $15. Let the people off the bus first or the driver will yell at you. They will definitely ask for tips. Some drivers are better than others. There are free headphones and pamphlets. CONs: At the last stop, you will have to get off the bus and wait for another bus. These buses are so old, they can’t continuously operate more than once. There were 2 lines and we ran into racism getting on the bus ( not from Big bus tour) A “Karen” accused us of cutting in and calling us names, when in fact we were right there waiting for the same bus. This was the worst part of our San Francisco trip. I think the lines could be better organized in front of their office and make sure they help people get on the bus so there’s no fights or nasty accusations.

      Highly recommend
Highly recommend. Was very interesting and detailed. There's so much more history to this island than just a prison. Recommend you go straight to the top to the audio tour entrance and then work your way down. That wasn't made clear to us, and this tour is self guided, so a lot of what you learn is from the headphones.

Not worth the $$, you can find better tour out there
It’s alright, the driver wasn’t friendly at all, as a local I can only imagine how intimidating it might be for tourists to be greeted by a rude driver as such, especially for those who don’t speak English well. And we were given the option to select Chinese audio tour when we booked (my mom needed it) but there was no Chinese audio tour available when on board…

The Hop On bus experience is always wonderful because you touch all of the good points in the city without having to worry about parking or driving

Great Way to Get Around the City
I had a great time during this bus tour! It was my first time visiting San Francisco and this hit most of the popular places and it also saves money on transportation getting around the city. I would recommend to do the entire loop once then pick the places you’d want to get off. Out of the drivers I had, Danny who did the last tour of the “day” tour was the best. He was very helpful and informative regarding locations and what to do. Overall, super friendly and he actually would take the time to slow down in locations that the audio was mentioning so you can see the referenced places. Really enjoyed this trip!

      Disappointing. Walking tour timed out!
The staff seemed knowledgeable enough yet no one told us how to plan the walking tour. We got on the VERY first bus of the day yet missed the tour as we were 6 minutes late to getting to stop 2. Very disappointed. Won't do that again! Beware before you sign up for this tour.

San Francisco Hop on Hop Off Bus - A Great Way to see the Sights
I bought combined tickets for Alcatraz and a 2 day hop on hop off bus ticket, these tickets came with access to the WWII Submarine tour and bicycle hire too, although we didn't realise this until using the bus ticket and it was a bit too late for the cycle hire for us! Bought the tickets through Attraction Tickets in London who were superb! We probably didn't use the bus tickets to their full advantage as we only used it one day and chose to stay on the bus for a complete circuit tour rather than hoping on and off! I would highly recommend doing the full circuit first and then if you have time, we didn't too man other things to do, go back around and get off at the places you really want to spend time at. The circuit takes you everywhere and the commentary via headphones is great too. A real experience driving over the Golden Gate Bridge, take a jumper or a hoodie very windy and cold and it's an open top bus. They give everyone a chance to move downstairs before crossing the bridge but it's a great experience on the open top deck!

      Pricey
The boat ride over was fast & nice, but when you approach the island the smell of the poop from the Seagulls on the island is overwhelming. And the flies are everywhere. Also the place is not well kept up by the park service. They seem to make a lot of money on these tours by the number of people who go every day & the high price for a ticket. It’s amazing they can’t even keep the grounds in better shape, at the very least. I wouldn’t highly recommend it. The best part was learning about the Native American occupation. That info was in the tiny theatre.

Great way to show your guests the City
This was a terrific way for my husband and me to show our out of town guests the city of San Francisco. We were staying near Fishermans wharf, so it was only a short walk to the beginning. It was pretty crowded at 10:30 am, so I would suggest going a little bit later, like starting around noon. I was impressed by how professional the staff was when greeting us and getting us loaded onto the bus. It was a beautiful day, so everybody sat on the top. The narration and audio quality was very good. A little hokey, but if it were not, it would be boring! It’s better than going in a car because you are high above things and can look down and see things without difficulty. Also when we got stuck in traffic around Golden Gate Park, my husband and I were not stressed about sitting in traffic. We could relax and just enjoy the view. The most difficult part was going over the Golden Gate Bridge. Although it was beautiful in the rest of the city, it was very windy and foggy on the bridge and you couldn’t even see the bridge! Make sure you bring a jacket/sweater just in case because it can be cold and windy. Also, bring a hat, sunscreen, and a water bottle. We did not get off the bus, but if we were going to do that, I think we would have done the entire circuit and then gone around again to do the hop on hop off. I could see that it looked like a bit of a challenge to get back on the bus, but if you’ve already gone around once, you wouldn’t worry so much about getting onto the top or sitting together with your group.

      Great for a first impression.
Great way to see the City. Shows you the highlights and helps you to decide what to see later in detail. Very good narration. Was very busy on the weekends. Long lines.

The Alcatraz part of the tour was very good however when we tried to redeem the 2nd part of the trip for the san francisco bay cruise with the tour operator 'Blue & Gold Fleet' we were told that "we are only entitled to the 2.45 pm tour" despite our voucher stating 'any departure time with multiple departures daily', and a tour about to depart half full !!!!!! We were told this was the case on any day of our remaining trip ??? Unfortunately our itinerary would not allow us make this time slot. Disappointing and I will be seeking a refund for this portion of the tour.

Great chance to spend time on the water viewing the GG bridge and the gorgeous landscape from a new vantage point.
    Well organized and enjoyable.
Alcatraz tour dock (pier 33) was walking distance from Bay Tour dock (pier 39) and we did one right after the other. Alcatraz tour was the right amount of time and the audio tour was much better than expected. Beautiful views the whole afternoon. Our two teens had great time! FYI you can walk to North Beach after and get good Italian food at Sotto Mare. :)

Overall, the tour was fantastic - however, the tour indicated there would be a tour by boat under the Golden Gate Bridge. This did not happen as the tour went directly to Alcatraz and directly back to port. Ultimately, my wife and I were happy to leave early as we were going to a football game that evening, but I believe this is false advertising. We paid for the tour and would expect to get our moneys worth.

    Incredible history made known.
Including prisoners, prison guards and their families and a community on the rock.

It was hard to hear the ranger speak, so a microphone is suggested.

Walking through the buildings and property was an incredible experience, leaving you with a sense of what life was like for the people placed in the prison.

Great experience and the boat trip out and around the island was nice. You need about 2 hours on the rock. We took the added cruise option under the golden gate after.
Last the of the day 5.30 so we got the sunset.

This tour is way overpriced and customer service is terrible. Save yourself a lot of money plus the frustration referenced by other reviewers by bypassing a useless middleman “tour operator”. This tour at $139 is marked up 75% over the cost if you book your ticket online directly with the companies operating the attractions (alcatrazcruises.com and blueandgoldfleet.com). Booking direct also gives you more options for departure times.

For a 75% mark-up, there should be decent communication and customer service. We got to Pier 39 and discovered San Francisco Tours and Activities had sent us vouchers for a Hop on Hop Off bus tour instead of the Bay Cruise. We had only one afternoon in San Francisco, and instead of enjoying a tour we spent 2 hours on a bench at the pier trying to get the correct voucher. I called and left two messages with San Francisco Tours and Activities, but nobody ever called me back. I also called TripAdvisor, and they tried to help, but all they could do was resend the email with the wrong voucher. Our afternoon in San Francisco was memorable, but not in a good way.

Alcatraz was excellent but the bay cruise was not so good, way too many people on it ,mainly non English speaking people who stayed at the railings and would not move to allow others to take photos. People should be made to use personal audio devices as they talked so loudly we couldn't hear the loud speaker to learn about the bay, some people played loud music
