About
Alcatraz Island was once the most secure federal prison in the U.S., and held notorious inmates like Al Capone. After being decommissioned in 1963, the prison is now a museum, welcoming millions of curious travelers every year. Catch the ferry on Pier 33 to Alcatraz and explore the island at your own pace as you soak up the views of San Francisco and the bay. You can take a guided tour with a park ranger to learn more about the intriguing anecdotes about the facility’s fascinating history. But book your spots early—tickets sell out fast. – Tripadvisor

A must do when in San Francisco
Buy timed tickets in advance to avoid queue at box office at Pier 33. The boat queue moved quickly once boarding started. Calm day so the short boat ride was great with soft drinks and snacks available (although lots of people seemed to have brought their own). A guide greets new arrivals at the island pier with the usual H&S info and 2 minute what you will see see. A map for $1 donation is available here, then after a short walk up hill go indoors and watch an introductory film. Then continue up towards the cell block. If you need help walking there is a shuttle that will take you from the pier to the top of the hill where the cell block is. I recommend taking the self guided audio tour but listen carefully to the instructions and look at the signs and stop the tape if you are falling behind to read more of the information or just admiring the view or you might find yourself missing a section. It was interesting to hear the story of the island from multiple points of view - guards, prisoners, families and the special exhibition about the Indian occupation. Having finished inside (at the obligatory shop) and handed back the tape, we wandered around the island (some steep stairs) back towards the dock (parts are blocked off during bird nesting). With great views of San Francisco and the Bay and you can easily see why the "escapees" thought they could swim to freedom and why they probably did not make it.

    A must-go in San Francisco
The whole visit is extremely well organized. The ferry leaves on time, you’re greeted by a park ranger who gives you all the info you need, and the audio guide is excellent (and available in many languages). You can stay on the island until 16:30 (no matter at what time you get there) Only warning, buy your tickets in advance online! In busy seasons, it can be sold out up to 1 month in advance

Good to visit to learn about history
Booking for the tour was fairly straightforward and the fact that only one company runs the tour makes it very easy. When we got off the boat we attended an information talk given by one of the ranger. Then we headed to watch a short film about the island. Make sure you take the free audio guide and then head to a self guided tour of the prison. There was a special exhibition in one of the buildings however we were unable to get to it. There are some great views of the San Fran city from the island. We spent just over 4 hours at the island, one can easily spend more time but allow at least 4hrs to make the most of your visit. My only comment will be regarding the terms and conditions listed in pre-booked online tickets. It asked us to arrive at the pier an hour in advance and bring an ID for everyone who was taking the cruise. However when we got there, we were told to come back 15mins or so before the boat departure time. We could have used that time elsewhere instead of waiting at the pier in the rain. Also the pier building is closed for renovations, so we had to wait outside in the open with only a few under cover areas. Our ID's were also not checked.

    Stories that made me cringe
A must visit National Park in SFO. With your paid ticket you get free admission to 4-5 other San Francisco area. This island prison was for the most vicious criminals. The stories sent chills up my spine. The audio is super full of informative stories with sound effects. The island is a sanctuary for many species of birds. Once migration begins for some of them, areas are protected so they can breed. We had a great experience. Dress warm or you will be cold and uncomfortable the entire time you are there. Keep in mind you are surrounded by water and all the buildings are concrete and cold! Make your reservation on line, it will save you a lot of waiting.

    Hard Time, Now Historic
The prisoners who were once on Alcatraz were doing hard time and the worst of the worst. Now, you can see and learn about what life was like for those men and the men who guarded them. Surprisingly, the wardens had an actual mansion on the island and the guards lived in apartments on the island with their families! The ferry boat ride over and back is definitely a big part of the experience as you approach and leave the island and can see the bay and San Francisco also. Once on Alcatraz, the Park Service ranger gives you an overview and then you can tour the main prison building (cellhouse) and other limited areas. I definitely recommend the included audio tour, where you hear the voices of some actual prisoners and guards describing what life was like. They also explain and there is a current exhibit about the American Indian occupation that took place after the prison closed. It too was an important piece of American history to know about. We booked through the authorized (by the Park Service) provider, Alcatraz CityCruises via their web site. Reservations in advance are recommended and they leave out of Pier 33 in the Fisherman's Wharf area. They recommend arriving 30 minutes or more early. We did and were actually able to get on a boat that was just getting ready to leave (otherwise we would have had to stand in line for 30 minutes for our scheduled departure).

City Info Experts, LLC -- 3rd Party Marketer **BEWARE**
I had made Alcatraz Tour reservations a couple months prior to the COVID pandemic and called the booking agency in mid-April 2020 to cancel due to obvious reasons. I was informed that Hornblower Classic Cab, the operator, would be refunding the charge, however, City Info Experts, the marketer, was not so willing and elected to instead provide a credit (good for 5 years) for the next time I use their services. In order to use this credit, I must call the company and let them know that I have it with them and, I assume, the original confirmation from the order to verify the transaction took place. I have a feeling they are just hoping people forget they have the credit and just pocket the processing fee as I suspect most people will not remember having it or retain documentation to prove they have it, especially if it's another 3 years before they re-book the tour. I'm a bit taken aback and disappointed that they wouldn't offer a refund and get a sense ownership lacks compassion even during a pandemic crisis. That being said, I definitely will try to avoid using their services going forward.

    Great place to visit!!!
This is someplace that has been on my bucket list for a number of years. So a few things I like to know about someplace before I go is the tour self guided or by guided tour only? This was a self guided tour with lots of displays with more info for each place you stop along the audio guide route. The boat trip only took I think 15 to 20 mins and the boat was crowded and was the dock when we got to the island. The prison is on top of a steep incline took about 15 mins to get to the top and we went in to start our tour. It took about an hour to get through the whole audio guide and there are a few steps but the area being seen is flat and on one level. There are several places that are closed off and not viewable by the public. The gift shop was very picked over on the way out of the prison block they were either out of stock or did not restock otherwise I would have picked a tshirt for sure. Overall was a great visit and would highly recommend this informative and visually stimulating experience (stunning views of the bay and San Francisco) to anybody in the bay area with half a day that needs to be filled.

    Great
Great visit, well worth all the hype. Tours were sold out so we were very glad to have booked months in advance. The system for boarding ferry is efficient and moves fast. The audio tour was well done, and moved through the cell block nicely. Definitely bring snacks and a drink and be prepared to spend time walking the island after the tour - it is beautiful with stunning views back to the city. Queue for the return ferry starts 20 min before depart time. Highly recommended.

A deep dive into Alcatraz history
Exploring Alcatraz was fascinating. I debated paying the extra $ to take the cruise that docks on the island & am glad I did! The tour guide gave us a great overview when we arrived & then took us on a basic tour to get us started, after which I went to the current exhibit marking the 50th anniversary of the Indian Occupation of the island. The Indians of All Tribes occupied the abandoned island and began the Red Power movement that has continued through Standing Rock and more. The art, photos, & personal stories were powerful. Next was the traditional Alcatraz exhibits and audio tour. It's all self-paced after the tour guide's beginning tour, so I wandered around for about four hours to see everything. There were two small booklets available for $1 each about the island and escape attempts that I was happy to buy. It's easy to imagine it as an active prison, especially with the audio tour that included the voices of actual former Alcatraz guards & prisoners. The contrast of the warm community of Indians of All Nations and the harsh prison was hard to wrap my head around, but in either case, the grounds themselves were absolutely beautiful, filled with greenery and flowers of all kinds, and the views of the city skyline, the Bay Bridge, and the Golden Gate Bridge were amazing. I highly recommend visiting Alcatraz. They say the average visit is around two and a half hours, but if you don't have kids rushing you along, I'd plan to stay longer - there is just so much to absorb!

A must see in San Francsico
My daughter and I visited Aalcatraz in January this year. Such a beautiful spot with stunning views of San Francisco. We had thought we might be a bit underwhelmed by the tour of the actual prison but the Audio Tour was superb. Being narrated by former inmates and prison guards the Alcatraz experience was really brought to life for us. We would recommend catching the ferry in the morning so you have plenty of time to explore the island before the final ferry leaves in the afternoon.

This is quite a unique place to visit. It can be difficult to get a ticket, so you have to book weeks well in advance. I would recommend booking via the official website as opposed to tours. It's the cheapest and most straight forward option. You take a ferry to and from the island which is very pleasant and provides nice photo ops. Once on the island, you are given a briefing about the different things you can see on the island, which include the prison of course and some nice nature. In the prison you can get an audio guide which is very interesting. There are also special demonstrations at certain times. Look out for the schedule when you land on the island. My favorite was the demonstration of how the cell doors are controlled. All in all a very interesting place.

The feeling you get when you enter brings you right back in time. The audio tour is excellent and take about 45 minutes. Ferry ride over is 15 minutes each way and tickets include both for $39.
Gift shop is perfect and the view is worth it alone,

So disappointed , my son lives in San Francisco and I've wanted to go visit Alcatraz since he moved there but Covid prevented us doing that .
Booked the cruise over this time , cruise line went in very quick and was run very efficiently . No food or drink allowed other than bottled water which is a shame they are missing huge revenue from not even having a coffee shop !
We didn't go to eat or drink though so wasn't an issue and it clearly stated on the email that there is no where to buy food or drink .
We wandered around the buildings outside the main jail reading the boards as we did so , they were informative enough . The whole place looks derelict though , now I know it's meant to look less than polished but this wouldn't be the way it looked while a working hail so I was disappointed to see weeds everywhere faded into boards crumbling walls etc There seems to be little maintenance going on to preserve it to be honest so I wonder for how long it will be open !
When you board the ferry there is a model of the whole island and it's buildings but what's accessible is a small fraction of this model , the rest is shut off with signs up saying it was too dangerous to go there !

There was a really interesting exhibit about the Indians that occupied the island after the jail shut but unfortunately the info was faded also , there were some letters hanging on a line from the children who had lived there at the time of the occupation but most were barely legible due to fading but then they had been badly preserved in laminate and hung right in front of a sunny window !!

The audio tour itself was easy to follow and very interesting at parts but very generic in others .

I live in Scotland , we are no stranger to ruins that aren't maintained the difference is we don't have to pay ÂŁ50 + a head to see them , we do have to pay for any that are maintained for preservation and rightly so .
One of the staff on the island said there was little funding other than tourist revenue for the island but the island was mobbed hundreds of people were there and the ferry's ran constant all day every one full . It seems a huge shame then if that revenue isn't enough to help maintain the island given its their biggest tourist attraction !

All in all I'm glad I finally went but I wouldn't be in a hurry to return unless they improved the tour area and exhibit

Make sure to get your tickets to The Rock for the time you want to depart before arriving. They have an easy to use website for booking. You’ll take a short cruise directly from the pier to Alcatraz which has some nice views of the city and bridges from the bay ... as long as the fog is low. The weather was fine and didn’t notice anything that would give us caution for sea sickness. (Note: the only food for purchase and approved location for eating is on the boats. There are bathrooms on the island and the boats). The boats did not seem crowded. Once on the island, they give a real quick introduction and let you know what is open and if there are special tours available. The main exhibit is the jail at the top. It a bit of a walk up some ramps. There is a tram for those with mobility issues (think powerful golf cart towing a few more golf cart looking cars). The audio tour was really good. It walks you though the prison narrated by people who used to work there and prisoners. They talk about the conditions, areas, and breakout attempts. There’s more to do there, but make sure to do the audio tour. The largest of the souvenir shops were while exiting the main prison at the top. (Last note: don’t bring luggage or anything larger than a standard backpack). We enjoyed our time, but were hoping to see more about the time that Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery saved San Francisco from ...

100/100 - great experience
Amazing history and buildings.
We were on the first early morning boat and stayed to 5pm
The audio tour is simple - a set of head phones you walk around within the jail and the ex jail guards and prisoners talk you through the jail and what went on.
It is absolutely brilliant
All guided tours during the day were free. Recommendation doing the night tour as well if you have time.
All tour guides and staff very friendly and helpful.
We went on a beautiful sunny day - there is also a lot to see on the outside of the jail.

One of the worst NPS/historical sites I've ever visited. Welcomed to the queue by a woman YELLING at people standing outside about masks (then charging $2.25 USD to anyone needing one). Constant, consistent yelling. Welcome, indeed (not). Arrived at the island to find, well, not much. Two cells open, no 're-created' historical update, nothing really to even walk through. We love history and would have loved to see some real/re-made version of cells even. More space dedicated to a politically-charged 'exhibit' about how bad it is to incarcerate criminals. Not to mention the absolute lack of care on the landscaping throughout, the bird poop literally everywhere ('its fly season' (fly season is every day when birds are pooping all over).
There was just nothing to it, we were all disappointed and it was a waste of time and money. NPS should close this site and redirect our tax dollars (or give them back).

This was the perfect pandemic activity! The island has just recently reopened and is operating at limited capacity. Reserving tickets through the official website was easy! The ticket says to arrive to Pier 33 early- 45 minutes before departure. We got there just a few minutes beforehand and had no problem! It was great weather when we went, and being outside was gorgeous and safe! Once you get close to the island, get down stairs and line up at the door opposite of the one you boarded from. You want to be the first group out of the door and then quickly get yourself up to the top of the hill to the jailhouse tour before the the rest of the passengers. It isn't crowded, but they are spacing family groups out every minute, so this will eliminate your wait. If you want to use your own phone, be sure to already have the Alcatraz app downloaded. Outside of the building, a person will direct you to download the app if you haven't already. Go inside, past another entry guide, and down the righthand hall of cells. DO NOT START THE TOUR ON YOUR APP until you have passed the desks where they hand out tour-players for those without the app. These are free to borrow and come with a set of disposable ear buds. The audio tour does a great job of narrating the building and bringing the experience to life.

The tour lasted maybe a half hour. Afterwards, you can walk around the island. We enjoyed seeing the beautiful plants that are well maintained by volunteers.

I had been to Alcatraz two decades ago, and the tour has drastically improved since then. I highly recommend the complimentary audio tour, voiced by actual former prison guards and inmates. It was very user friendly in terms of walking you through the prison, and telling you the history in gripping and personal terms.

I was also thrilled to discover that throughout the island there was mention of the Native American re-occupation of the island as part of the Red Power movement in the late 60s and early 70s. It's an incredibly interesting and important story that is seldom told outside of the Bay Area, and it's something no one should miss if they go to Alcatraz.

Went to Alcatraz yesterday man what a disappointment from the National Park Service! More than 60% percent of the exhibits are closed and the NPS has been “restoring” the property which takes all historical value out of it, and has a bunch of construction 🚧 on the island, no where in the tickets does it mention this on my tickets i purchased it said I would get to tour the rec yard and the garden both these exhibits where closed along with two other hand fulls of exhibits, and then there’s a fresh patch of concrete that goes through all the cells, the gift store was 95% open just two educational things closed in there but still super open to get that merch money.... I couldn’t use the self guided audio tour because I have ADHD and the audio was so slow I mean really slow and there were no lines cause we were the last tour in the cell house, there was no way to keep my attention with the slow and barley could hear audio device. Normally park rangers are cool, not on Alcatrazthe park staff is rude, and so is John the rude clown that works in the cell house tour! Overall it was a waste of $150 bucks in my opinion to see a bunch of island construction, closed areas and to be talked to like crap by the staff. If the cable cars are not open the rock shouldn’t be open either, trust me when I say this don’t waste your money on this if your in San Francisco you can blow your money on sooooo much more better stuff! NPS y’all should take notes 📝 from The Ohio State Reformatory because it kicks Alcatraz ass in authenticity! ..... YouTube a tour of Alcatraz from 8 years + and you’ll see they recently changed the sign, their trying to recreate their money 💰 pit and the new improvements take the legitimacy out of it for me, I understand improvements but the NPS is only making improvements to keep this money box alive!

It's featured in movies, for sports events and serves as the backdrop of many iconic scenes. Alcatraz holds a historic place in American folklore. It's worth a visit or two, to hear the stories while witnessing the actual premise. Plan ahead, as tickets to visit the island are usually sold out in advance. There are also bay cruises which go around the island, but special tickets are required to visit.
