I see they are booking starting Friday March 12. Any advice on whether it’s worth it?

Some people love it, some people hate it. Like everything else, depends on the individual. If it was a choice between that or the deYoung Museum, I'd do the museum, but that's me. YMMV.

I’m a fan.

Like pp said, different strokes for different folks. I’d much rather do Alcatraz than an art museum. Coupled with the boat and views and it’s just a nice excursion.

I especially like the specialty, behind the scenes tours. If any of those are running, they are worth while.

We only spent maybe 15 minutes before we took the next boat back. The boat ride was nice. WIth that said Im glad I went once otherwise I wouldnt have known I didnt like it. As mentioned above some people love it, I didn't and have no need to go back.

Time may be better spent walking to Golden Gate Bridge.

Alcatraz is for people who like history. I thought it was interesting and I'm glad I went, but I don't have any urge to go back.

I don’t think the history is that well done on Alcatraz. It’s marketed as an old prison.

If you decide you want to go, be sure the prison building is open. It reopened for awhile last fall but only outdoors, not the building.

The price has really ramped up over the past few years. Worth it subjective so it’s up to you to decide. Many visitors say it was the highlight of their trip. Locals are much more ~meh~ on the experience.

If I had to rate Alcatraz against the de Young or the Legion, even based on historical value ... well, Alcatraz would not measure up.

Alcatraz, at least once. We did it and spend several hours there. I don't see how anyone can spend just 15 minutes and make a judgement. In 15 min one can barely walk from the boat dock to one of the buildings.

Museums, I can go back again and again. Alcatraz, once is enough, but at least I went once.

I agree with Madeline — I am “meh” about visiting Alcatraz and have never been there. I would visit the DeYoung and Asian Art Museum rather than visiting Alcatraz.

No need to listen to those that have not been there, yet tell you not to.

It’s a really neat place. Interesting stories, great views, nice little boat ride, and last time I visited one of the actual prisoners was actually working in the gift shop. I really couldn’t tell you if he will be there when they reopen but that was a real treat.

Go visit Alcatraz! If you don’t, I guarantee that you’ll go back home kicking yourself that you didn’t see it.
