Charlie Adam has told BBC Sportsound Rangers should look at Manchester United first-team coach Michael Carrick – as Steven Gerrard’s replacement.
The search for Gerrard’s replacement has begun. Early reports say Giovanni van Bronckhorst is the main contender to replace the new Villa boss.
But the likes of Gennaro Gattuso, John Terry, Frank Lampard, Alex Neil and plenty more have already been linked to the vacant Rangers post.
Sporting director Ross Wilson will want to get a manager in quickly. But the timing of Gerrard’s exit will have surely surprised the Gers transfer chief.
Speaking on Thursday evening after Gerrard’s exit, ex-Rangers man Adam threw a new name into the hat – mentioning Manchester United’s Carrick.
“I’ll throw a name in the hat. Michael Carrick – he has been at Man United, a big club, good coach. It was a gamble with Steven,” Adam said.
“Will they go down that same route? Will they go for an experienced name? There will only be three or four people that know.”
Adam on Carrick: Could Manchester United man suit Rangers?
When Rangers brought in Gerrard from Liverpool – where he had worked as Under-18’s gaffer – he lacked any senior experience as manager.
Of course, what attracted Rangers to Gerrard was the fact he is a big name and the calibre of players needed would have been attracted by Gerrard.
The difference is that Gerrard has taken Rangers to the next level. Now, they are the calibre of side capable of attracting a van Bronckhorst, a Gattuso.
But if they feel that they could go again and find an up-and-coming coach with potential talent – they could do little better than Carrick.
It is a massive gamble, when Gerrard had little to lose. Again, it is different, with the winners of the Premiership going straight into the group stages.
That addition £40million in cash is crucial for Rangers – with the club announcing losses of more than £20million over the last operating year.
Carrick will be a good manager in the future, but to throw him into the hotseat would be an enormous risk – one that should not be entertained.
