Sentiment in Argentina nowadays, nomad worker asking

Hello all

I'm working remotely and would like to spend sometime in BA. I saw someone from Argentina here in California and she told me the situation is miserable due to economic challenges for regular people. If it's not too bad I still want to enjoy knowing (and supporting) this great country and culture. Here is some info about me:

-- I want to stay in Palermo Soho Airbnb. Get a co-working space to work in the morning, gym in the afternoon and meeting people in the evening.

-- I enjoy European style buildings, love to watch tango dancing and improve my intermediate Spanish.

-- I will likely spend 1-2 months at the beginning June/July maybe, too cold?!

Thanks all for your input!

Cheers,

Cal

I can’t possibly determine what is “too cold”, generally BA has a mild winter season, snow is very rare, etc. I suggest looking at historic weather data for the months you are considering.

Palermo feels (I was last there in March 2024) as prosperous as ever, with more noticeable unhoused people here and there. No doubt the economic situation is dire and miserable for many people, but those who gravitate to Palermo Soho have money to spend and do so.

The divide between the ‘haves and have-nots’ is widening. Prices have increased and the USD value has been flat, but even with high inflation, many prices will be lower than in southern California. Yes, you will see people begging or selling packets of tissues to make a few cents, but open misery and suffering doesn’t compare to what I see everyday where I live- Seattle.

One or two months is a good way to dip in your toes. I say, do it!

Thanks Craige and Molly,

Certainly the sights of poorness and hopelessness are ordinary things in SoCal too!

I have been to Mexico many times, and love the Latin openness and joyfulness in general. I guess my concern is people in Argentina are too negative and sad to even tolerate a visitor!

Cheers, Cal

welcome

take or leave.....

you say..."......... If it's not too bad I still want to enjoy knowing (and supporting) this great country and culture......-- I want to stay in Palermo Soho Airbnb...."

Ok.

but will you do any homework on who the owners of the AirB&B ? are they locals or foreign investors?

most of your money will go to the lodging. on my 1 month travels, thats the #2 cost - lodging.

good luck

You'll have a brilliant time. Argentine's live for the day and are well practiced at it given two decades of economic decline. They still have some of the best parties in the world, and there are great drinking spots all around the city if you want to get out and meet people. June/July is the dead of winter, short days etc, but usually a decent amount of sun. Personally I hate missing that time of year in the northern hemisphere given how long we wait for the London winter to end, but if you're from San Diego my guess is you get enough sunny days to keep you satisfied the rest of the year!

Fast fibre connections are now common across the city, especially affluent areas like Palermo. I've done two stints of two months remote working in the last couple of years and it has worked out perfectly.

Note they have 'Friend Day' at the end of June which is a day when everyone goes out with their friends and some exchange gifts. Bit of fun if you're there.

Hi r c,

Great point. In fact I always do some investigations on my Airbnb hosts. I bad experiences with ones hosted by companies / investors.

Will keep that in mind when exploring lodging. Thank you.
