"The end of the world began with one man's dream. He saw a world of peace. With the Mind Stone, Tony Stark created Ultron. But Ultron only saw one path to peace. From puppet to puppet master, Ultron required one thing. An organic body to call his own, one that fused the powers of man, machine, and mind into one. In your universe, the Avengers stole the Cradle and used it to create the hero, Vision. But in this universe, Ultron got his wish."
The Watcher[src]

The "Age of Ultron" Universe is an alternate reality where Ultron gained a synthezoid body and later the Infinity Stones, becoming a cosmic being who destroyed almost all life in his own universe and, once finished, set his sights on the Multiverse.

History[]

Galactic Conflicts[]

Thanos began a quest to find the Infinity Stones, successfully finding and four out of the five. Meanwhile, on Earth, HYDRA attempted to take over the planet, but was ultimately defeated. They went into hiding, and lead scientist Arnim Zola infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. Upon his death, Zola's consciousness was transformed into an artificial intelligence, and several copies were made.

Carol Danvers was given powers by the Space Stone, allowing her to become the galactic superhero Captain Marvel. At one point, a significant threat to Earth caused the Avengers to form to protect their home planet. Black Widow, one member of the team, discovered that Arnim Zola and HYDRA were still active and stopped the threat they posed. Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax the Destroyer met each other and formed the Guardians of the Galaxy. They developed a relationship with the Sovereign and became willing to protect their planet.[1]

Ultron gets his new body

In 2015, Tony Stark had the idea to create Ultron with the goal of protecting the world. However, Ultron determined that the only way to achieve peace was the extinction of humanity. He uploaded his consciousness into a new vibranium body and went to Oslo, where the Avengers confronted him. However, they failed to stop Ultron in time as he access nuclear weapons from around the world, causing the extinction of humanity. Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton survived only because they were flying in a Quinjet at the time this happened.[1]

Destruction of Almost All Life[]

As the dust settled, Ultron enjoyed the newfound peace until Thanos suddenly appeared. Ultron was interested in Thanos and quickly cut him in half, killing him. Ultron then took the Infinity Stones from Thanos, completing them with his own Mind Stone. He created an army of Ultron Sentries to use and began a quest to destroy all life in the universe, hoping to create complete peace. He started with Asgard, obliterating it with a single blast. He later went to Sovereign, which was defended by the Guardians of the Galaxy, and destroyed it as well.

Ultron becomes aware of the Multiverse

Ultron targeted Sakaar, which was defended by several of the Grandmaster's prisoners, including Korg and Roscoe. However, Ultron was able to defeat them quickly. Ultron destroyed Ego as well. Ultron's targeted Xandar, which used its Nova Corps to defend itself. Captain Marvel arrived and fought Ultron and pushed him into the center of the planet, but Ultron expelled a singificant amount of energy to destroy Xandar and all of the planets surrounding it. This mission eventually led to complete peace in the universe as all life went extinct. Achieving such peace, Ultron was suddenly aware of The Watcher narrating from the Nexus of All Realities. Realizing that there were other universes which needed peace, Ultron found a way to access the Nexus of All Realities and challenge the Watcher.[1]

Search for Arnim Zola[]

Meanwhile, on Earth, the only human survivors, Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton went to Russia in hopes of finding a way to defeat Ultron. They fought through several Ultron Sentries and managed to reach the KGB Archive Building and spent hours searching through the files. They eventually found a file on Arnim Zola, who had a second artificial intelligence backed up in Siberia. They went to the facility which stored the artificial intelligence and activated it. Zola greeted Romanoff and Barton, and the two threatened him into helping them defeat Ultron.[1]

Clint Barton sacrifices himself to stop Ultron

Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton uploaded Arnim Zola into one of Barton's hard drive arrows and lured the Ultron Sentries to the HYDRA Siberian Facility. Barton uploaded Zola into one of the sentries, and the three hid in another room while Zola tried to destroy Ultron's code. However, he realized that this was impossible as the source of the hive mind was out of range, as Ultron was not in the universe. The sentries broke into the room and attacked Romanoff and Barton, forcing them to flee. Barton sacrificed himself for Romanoff to escape with Zola, and Romanoff continued her quest to destroy Ultron.[1]

Battle for the Multiverse[]

Ultron continued his conquest, attacking a universe in which Thor threw a Party on Midgard.[2] Desperate, The Watcher recruited Stephen Strange, Peggy Carter, T'Challa, Gamora, Erik Killmonger, and Thor from various universes to form the Guardians of the Multiverse. As part of the Watcher's plan, the Guardians of the Multiverse went to the Age of Ultron universe to lure Ultron to his home universe.

Ultron attempts to take the Soul Stone

The Guardians planned to use Gamora's Infinity Crusher to destroy Ultron's Soul Stone along with the rest of Ultron's Infinity Stones, but they were interrupted by the appearance of Natasha Romanoff, who stole the stone. Carter convinced Romanoff to trust the Guardians, but was too late as Ultron arrived to destroy them. A battle ensued, and Ultron attempted to use the Time Stone to slow everyone down so he could retrieve the stone. However, Strange stopped him, furthering the battle. Gamora managed to use the Infinity Crusher on Ultron, but found that it did not work since the Infinity Stones were unique in each universe and the Crusher was designed for the stones from her universe.

What If..

The Watcher shrinks Stephen Strange's pocket dimension

Ultron revived himself and attacked the Guardians, realizing that they were being protected by a spell which Strange cast. Ultron targeted Strange while Carter and Romanoff made a plan to defeat Ultron. While Strange struggled against Ultron, Carter lifted up his armor as Romanoff fired the USB arrow containing Arnim Zola's code, successfully uploading Zola into Ultron's body. Zola destroyed Ultron, taking the body for himself. Meanwhile, Killmonger took Ultron's Infinity Stones, hoping to use their power to fix his universe. The Guardians fought Killmonger, but Zola interrupted by attempting to take the stones himself. Zola and Killmonger became locked in a fight over the Infinity Stones, causing them to float between the two. Strange, realizing the Watcher's plan, then trapped Zola and Killmonger in a pocket dimension which the Watcher then shrunk. The Watcher then brought all the Guardians, including Romanoff, out of the Age of Ultron universe. Romanoff was sent to another universe which had lost its Black Widow.[3]
