The Jefferson Airplane defined the San Francisco sound. Heavy in all dimensions: loud, engulfing, tribal, and politically provocative, with an echo of folk music. Leader Marty Balin once said 'we want our music to be like a big hand that reaches down and grabs you and shakes you.' That is certainly how I experienced it as a teenager. Prior to the psychedelic fad bands played at much lower volume and the songs were much shorter and simpler. The 'San Francisco sound' was like an LSD trip, whisking you off your feet and drowning your senses. The very high volume at which bands began to play conveyed a bacchanalian spirit and/or a sense of menace. The Airplane were front and center politically, with lyrics urging the overthrow of the government and the destruction of the old order. Of course, there's a limit to how violently the big hand can shake you from a cheap portable, but they made the most of it.
There's not much point in verbally glossing the various tracks. You have to hear them and fall under their spell. The disc is just one catchy song after another, each flowing seamlessly into the next and oozing with atmosphere. There is the occasional 'experimental' interlude, giving your ear a sorbet between the catchy riffs. Despite the frequent buzzsaw guitars, there is a dreamy quality pervading the album, especially on 'Martha', but throughout really, that reminds me of Debussy or Delius. But if you just want to crank it up and blast off, it's fine for that too.
For those who remember the sixties, listening to these grooves will be nostalgic. If you weren't there but want to get a feel for the era and its music, the Jefferson Airplane personifies the hippie/radical scene more than any other band, even the Grateful Dead, who had Maoist tendencies (-; Perhaps I should also mention the album Cheap Thrills by Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, with its wild James Gurley guitar solos and immortal R. Crumb cover, as well as Joplin's most thrilling performance ever on Ball and Chain.
So, what I mean to say is that the remaster is definitely worth it. The bonus tracks are fun but not the reason to buy the re-issue. The reason to buy it is the sonic punch it now has.
Even better, and for the same reason is "Crown of Creation' which still sounds timeless because of both the original stellar production and the maturity of the song craft. For they could never top it. And once they started Grunt and added Papa John's fiddle it was like waving a white flag. The music began to sound like contractually obligated shambles.
If you are looking to rediscover Jefferson Airplane and especially if you are already quite familiar with the music, I think the remasters of "After the Bathing at Baxter's" & "Crown of Creation" will but a wide smile on your face as it did for me. I hope this helps you decide.
First of all this has some great bonus tracks! The bonus tracks, alone, are worth the price of the cd!
Secondly, the remastering of this album is one of the few I've heard where you can REALLY HEAR THE DIFFERENCE! If you are familiar with the original lp or the original cd, well, both were poorly engineered, and when you hear THIS you are going to go "Wow!" It's like hearing it for the first time. You can really hear the various instruments as opposed to it sounding like a muddy mess. ;-D
Many of us Airplane fans consider this the best album they ever did. In fact I consider it in the Top 20 albums of ALL TIME, maybe even Top 10! It's a masterpiece of 60's psychedelia! Yes, a masterpiece! It ranks right up there with Are You Experienced? and Sgt. Pepper!
So if you're an Airplane fan (and that means you MUST like psychedelia!) then you have to get this. Don't delay, do it today! You'll be glad you did! (I recommend the cd; god knows how the mp3's will sound. With mp3's they never sound AS good as a cd, and sometimes sound much worse. Get the cd then rip your own mp3's using EAC or similar excellent mp3 rippper (NOT WMP!)
