Regions of Africa Map

Africa is divided into five regions: East, South, West, North and Central.

Western Africa

Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger
Nigeria, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (United Kingdom Overseas Territory), Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo.

West Africa is known to have an estimated population of nearly 400 million people. Females are close to 190,000,000 and males are around 195,000,000. The region is also known for its Economic power-hub known as ECOWAS (full name: Economic Community of West African States) established in 1975 in Lagos. The organisation aims to improve the economy of the region.

Some interesting facts about West Africa include:

  • West Africa has varieties of culture and diverse language than the entire Asain continent. Nigeria is home to more than 400 languages. Taraba state has more diverse language speakers than 30 Asian countries.
  • Liberia, a country in Africa, is Africa’s first independent country. Around 1847, Liberia got her independence. About a century later, India broke free from colonialism.
  • The Sokoto Caliphate is a powerful Islamic empire that can be found in Nigeria. It has its leader as the Sokoto Sultan, Sa’adu Abubakar. Before European colonisation, it emerged as the most powerful empire. Though its power has waned, Sokoto Caliphate still wields strong influence over Nothern Nigeria.

Northern Africa

Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Sudan. North Africa is located around the Northern part of the African continent. North Africa is filled with deserts, especially in the South where there is the Sahara. Then in the western portion of North Africa, there is the Atlas Mountain. The Eastern part has the Nile river as its main geographical feature. The people of Northern Africa are Muslims.

East Africa

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. East Africa is known for its Safari and wildlife. It has some of the fastest land animals including lions, cheetahs, gazelles and wildebeests.

Central Africa

Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo Republic – Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, São Tomé & Principe. The six of these countries are also part of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa. They all share a common currency known as the Central African CFA franc. Central Africa is predominantly a farming and fishing region. The region is also known for its high poverty and famine. Chad, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Sudan are oil-exporting countries.

Southern Africa

Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe. The economy of Southern Africa quite differs from other African regions. This is because South African countries export precious stones and minerals like gold, copper, diamonds and cobalt. Still, poverty, mismanagement of resources and corruption still inhibit the growth of these countries economically. Southern African countries also thrive in agriculture and tourism.
