There are 54 countries that makeup Africa, and they all call the continent home (from North to South and East to the West).

This is the poorest continent in terms of wealth, despite the fact that it has platinum (which is used in jewelry and industrial applications), uranium (which is used to produce nuclear energy), nickel (which is used in stainless and steel), arable land for agriculture, and oil.

How Many Countries in Africa Does Exist?

There are currently 54 countries on the African continent in our globe. The African Union, sometimes known as the AU, is the most important organization on the continent of Africa. It is comprised of every single African nation.

There was a claim to be the rightful authority over the region that was occupied by SDR, which caused instability among the nations until 1979, when amicable agreements were struck by all parties in an effort to resolve the conflict.

Since its founding in 1976, the Socialist Republic of the Dominican Republic (SDR) has garnered the recognition of only a fraction of the world’s states.

Following Morocco’s accession in January 2017, the total number of members of the Africa Union increased to 54, and the United Nations acknowledged all African countries as members of the organization, with the exception of SDR, which has not yet been recognized by the UN.

Quick Note: Ethiopia and Liberia are the only countries in all African countries that were not colonized during the scramble for Africa which was between 1876-1914.

African Countries and Region

Africa is subdivided into five regions according to the UN and each of all African countries is considered to be in a specific region. The Five African regions according to the UN are:

1. Northern Africa
2. Eastern Africa
3. Western Africa
4. Southern Africa
5. Central Africa

Northern Africa

The countries of Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, South Sudan, Sudan, Tunisia, and Western Sahara are located in Northern Africa, sometimes known as the north of Africa.

This region is dominated by the Sahara desert and is located in the northernmost portion of Africa.

All of the African countries in the region have a culture and set of customs that are, for the most part, very similar to one another. Arabs and Berbers, of which the vast majority are Muslims, make up the largest ethnic groups in the northern region of Africa.

Egypt is the most populous country in the area, and the fact of the matter is that only Egypt out of all the countries in Africa is considered to be transcontinental. The majority of the country is located in North Africa, while the rest is in the western part of Asia.

Eastern Africa

There are 20 countries that makeup East Africa. Although they are members of the East African Community (EAC), Burundi and Rwanda are also considered to be in Central Africa. On the other hand, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia are considered to be in the horn of Africa.

Agriculture, fishing, mining and mineral extraction, as well as industrial manufacturing, are some of the economic activities that take place in the region.

Ethiopia is widely recognized as the oldest sovereign nation on the African continent and is often credited with being the first country in Africa to successfully fight off European colonial forces and maintain its independence.

Western Africa

Also known as West of Africa, this region consists of over 400 million people, with French and English being the two most spoken official languages in the region.

Interestingly, the richest man in Africa is From West Africa – Nigeria. Other West African countries include 16 other countries which are Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, cote d’lvoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

Among all these countries, Nigeria is a giant when it comes to fashion and style, music and entertainment, economy, cultural heritage and more.

Cape Verde and Ghana have distinct facts from other West African countries; Cape Verde is the only West African Country Island and Ghana is the first West African country to gain independence from the colonial masters.

The regional organization in West Africa is ECOWAS which consists of 15 countries excluding Saint Helena and Mauritania.

Southern Africa

According to the list compiled by the United Nations, the region known as Southern Africa or South of Africa is comprised of the countries of Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, and Swaziland.

However, other countries, such as Angola, Botswana, Comoros, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, are members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). This community was established in 1993.

Exporting natural resources including gold, diamonds, platinum, and uranium is the primary source of revenue for the economy of this region.

Central Africa

Central Africa or middle of Africa consists of two most spoken languages; French and Sango with Bantu being the most populous people in the region.

Countries in central Africa have many cultural relationships in common which includes music, dance, art, marriage and many more.

Lake Chad serves as economic importance to the region because most people in the region are farmers, fishermen and herdsmen.

Central Africa consist of 11 countries which are Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of Congo, Sao Tome and Principle according to the UN list of central Africa region countries and sometimes South Sudan also included, with majority being Christians and traditional worshipers.

So, How Many countries In Asia?

Asia is the largest continent with over 4.5 billion population covering over quarters of earth’s land area.

The continent consists of some developed countries on earth today, totaling 49 countries according to UN list.

In fact, most religions were given birth in the continent which includes Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism and so many other religions. The continent is one of the fastest growing continents in the world.
