Shekhar Suman’s son and actor-singer Adhyayan Suman, who debuted with Haal–e–Dil in 2008, hasn’t had a smooth journey in his decade-long career. Adhyayan, who will be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, which also features his father Shekhar, says there were a lot of misconceptions about him in the industry.

While speaking with Siddharth Kannan on his podcast, the actor opened up about how he has been misunderstood by a lot of people in Bollywood which might have been a deterrent in his career growth. He said, “People thought I am a star kid and the whole nepotism debate painted me in a certain way which was completely different from who I am as a person.”

Speaking about the lull in his career, The Raaz: The Mystery Continues actor said that he refrains from speaking about his hardships because he isn’t successful and people won’t listen to his story. “If I told anyone about what all I have gone through in the past 15 years, I don’t think anyone would care. There will come a time when I will be able to tell my story and the hardships that I have endured. What life has taught me, no school can,” he narrated.

Adhyayan Suman also spoke about people’s perception of him which changed after they got to know him in person. “Now those who started working with me realised that they had misconceptions about me and told me, ‘We thought of you a certain way but you aren’t like how we perceived you.’ Even Sanjay Leela Bhansali ji was told things about me and his perception also changed after working with me. People spoke negatively about me and projected that I was not serious about what I did. I was not serious about acting or my craft. They also said that I wasn’t punctual on sets and all this is very unfortunate,” he stressed.

Festive offer

Adhyayan feels grateful for the opportunity which Bhansali gave him in Heeramandi. “Sanjay Leela Bhansali ne mera haath tab thamaa jab kisi ne mere liye darwaza nahin khola (Sanjay Leela Bhansali held my hand when others closed doors on me). So when he opened his doors for me, it meant so much.”

Shekhar Suman, who will be seen playing Zulfikar in Heeramandi, talking about the struggles his son has faced in his personal life and career, called Bhansali ‘godsent’. “Adhyayan lagged behind 12-13 years in his career. He went through the worst phase in his life. He was into a deep abyss where you are despondent and almost on the verge of giving up. He became suicidal but at the end of it, he had faith and hung onto the last vestige of faith ki mera kuch hoga (something will happen),” Shekhar said.

He added that despite him being an actor, he can’t help his son overcome the challenges that life throws at him. “He has to fend for himself and fight his own battle and make an identity for himself. I cried when Sanjay Leela Bhansali praised Adhyanan. I thought it was long overdue and his validation means a lot.”
