Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea has the largest population in the Pacific region with more than 8 million people.

It is also one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, with over 800 languages and hundreds of indigenous ethnic groups. Despite an economy based on a rich endowment of natural resources, PNG faces significant economic and social challenges. Poor law and order, lack of infrastructure, complex governance arrangements, and gender inequality are key challenges to future development.

The population is overwhelmingly poor, and around 80 percent of Papua New Guineans live in traditional rural communities. The development challenges for children and youth are particularly stark, with an estimated 40 percent of children stunted and one in five children not enrolled in school. Nearly half the population is under the age of 20.

ASI currently supports Papua New Guinea’s Internal Revenue Commission providing long-term technical assistance to strengthen the tax system in the country.
