Adam Carolla was born on May 27, 1964 and grew up in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin before his family settled in North Hollywood, California. He graduated from North Hollywood High School where he played football. Carolla took classes at Los Angeles Valley Community College but quit school and worked as a carpenter, carpet cleaner, traffic instructor and boxing instructor to support himself while also studying with The Groudlings, the elite Los Angeles improvisational group.

In 1994 Adam Carolla met Jimmy Kimmel when he trained the radio personality for a boxing match. Kimmel was called "Jimmy the Sports Guy" on KROQ's morning radio show "Kevin & Bean". Through his connection with Kimmel, Carolla landed a spot on the morning radio show playing the character Mr. Birchem, a cranky wood shop teacher. The following year, Carolla signed with the William Morris Agency and became the co-host of KROQ's syndicated program "Loveline" which he co-hosted with Dr. Drew Pinsky.
