i always thought this was for kids and i almost put it on last time i was babysitting.... thank GOD we just watched frozen instead because seeing jim carrey fuck monica from friends whilst "the lion sleeps tonight" plays in the background is not it
OOOOOOOOF. This movie aged like a fine wine that was opened 25 years ago and left sitting outside.
Hasn't aged well. The noted transphobia is undoubtedly an issue, but just as bad is the blatant sexism. Ventura trading work for sexual favours, demeaning women. It's hard to think of a more repellent scene in a film effectively aimed at young audiences than the final "unmasking"; a woman in power being stripped and sexually humiliated in front of a large audience of gawping men - and it's played for laughs too.

EDIT: Yes, I edited my years-old review of Ace Ventura to punch it up. The old version was something I dashed off in five seconds at work when my coworker was trying to get fired and spent all day watching shitty movies in our shared office. It’s now the fifth most-liked review of Ace Ventura on here, and easily the most popular thing I’ve written on Letterboxd, but it was clunky and not very funny. Every time it got a like I’d get a little push notification and it was always a little irritating. Like many of the most pathetic people…
The favourite film of a five-year-old Will Sloan. It is no longer my favourite film, although I did laugh numerous times before it became the Birth of a Nation of transphobia in the third act. No matter how bad That Scene is in your memory, the reality is worse. Felt very strong Roger-Ebert-watching-Isabella-Rossellini-in-Blue Velvet emotions watching Sean Young in this.
Approximately 40% reaction shots. The scene where Ace burns his clothes and cries naked in the shower is as intense as anything in Bad Lieutenant. Udo Kier randomly shows up but does not have much to do - did Tom Shadyac even know who he was?
The first two thirds of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective are fantastic. There's constant laughs and it's surprisingly witty for such a manic, seemingly lowbrow affair. Jim Carrey is also perfect in his physical, goofy performance. It's a shame then that the final third is aggressively transphobic and the laughs dry up as the plot tries to tie up all the disparate narrative strands. I love far too many moments of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective to ever call it less than great but some of those final scenes are really heinous. 80% comedy gold, 20% unforgivably bad.
It’s almost genius how insane Jim Carey’s performance is here. It’s practically Freddy Got Fingered levels of protagonist idiocy. Ace Ventura is a living caricature of a man, quite literally so. He is as unsubtle and obnoxious as those caricatures from a fun fair. There isn’t a single moment where we glimpse the man beneath Ace Ventura’s mile thick wall of jokes and funny voices and spastic movements. I don’t even know if there is a man in there or just more wall.
