Overview

Quirky hotel with perks like a rooftop pool and lounge
Somewhat removed from top LA attractions

The Ace Hotel opened in January 2014 after a complete renovation of the historic United Artists Theater and recent guests describe the look of this downtown Los Angeles hotel as trendy, but true to its past. The hotel nods to its history with a restored 1,600-seat movie theater, but recent guests appreciated its modern amenities, too, like the juice shop, rooftop pool and lounge, and the contemporary L.A. Chapter restaurant. All of the loft-style rooms have an urban, industrial design and feature flat-screen TVs, minibars and free Wi-Fi access. Guests who stayed on lower floors caution that rooms are small and late night noise can seep in from the streets, and suggest opting for an upgraded room or higher floor for more square footage and a private terrace. The majority of visitors applauded the staff's friendliness and note that they're exceptionally knowledgeable of the area.

The 1927 United Artists building retains its original neon marquee, but everything inside has been given a makeover by L.A. design team Commune, which also worked on Ace's Panama City property. The result is an unabashed hipsters' playground, from the wall lined with vinyl records behind the check-in desk to LA Chapter's coffee bar serving Stumptown coffee across the hall.

Its situation on the not-yet-hot end of lower Broadway, where you'll need to walk 10 minutes or so to get to the Metro (or the Staples Center or the Convention Center), means it's not the business traveler's first choice, so your chances of scoring a bargain are better than at many other hip hotels in the area.

Either lovingly cool, a bit too hip or a touch self-conscious depending upon your purview, there is no denying that Downtown's newest hotel opened to universal acclaim. And the minds behind it care deeply about their product. Some rooms are cubby-box small, but the 'medium' rooms are doable.
