Plucky Gon’s quest to find his dad leads him into a whole world of crazy adventure.

The Hunter hopefuls begin their journey by storm-tossed ship, where Gon meets Leorio and Kurapika, the only other applicants who aren't devastated by bouts of seasickness.

Having survived the terrors of the high seas, Gon and his companions now have to prove their worth in a variety of tests in order to find the elusive Exam Hall. And once they get there, will they ever leave alive...?

He wants to follow in the footsteps of his father and become a hunter—the most prestigious career in this world. Hunters are licensed to go anywhere and are respected by all; they are the protectors of the human and natural world. Gon's father is one of the world's greatest hunters, and Gon shares many of his gifts, but there's a catch: only one in 10,000 applicants for a hunter's license even makes it to the examination hall, and the odds worsen from there. In this volume, Gon leaves home and befriends two other hunter hopefuls: the mysterious Kurapika, who is the last of [his] clan, and Leorio, who seems a superficial moneygrubber yet actually has a heart of gold. Together they solve riddles and overcome obstacles, but their journey is only beginning. Togashi shows a deft touch with this standard manga story, already a hit in Japan. Gon and his companions are endearing and complex, and they complement each other well. The artwork is clear and graceful, though the last chapter shows some graphic violence that may upset younger readers. Those looking for the next Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh can stop searching. (Mar.)

About the Author

Yoshihiro Togashi's manga career began in 1986 at the age of 20, when he won the coveted Osamu Tezuka Award for new manga artists. He debuted in the Japanese Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1989 with the romantic comedy Tende Shôwaru Cupid. From 1990 to 1994 he wrote and drew the hit manga YuYu Hakusho, which was followed by the dark comedy science-fiction series Level E and the adventure series Hunter x Hunter. In 1999 he married the manga artist Naoko Takeuchi.

Coming in as a big fan of the anime I wanted to get into the manga. Though I’ll probably just read it on the Shonen app (I’m not spending over 350 bucks for all them), it’s still cool to own a physical copy or two. The print quality is good, the art is awesome, and the story is amazing. There are certain things that differ from the anime so it’s worth experiencing both. I’d recommend it.

And so my collection begins!... If you've seen the Hunter x Hunter anime most likely you know what you're already in for! And if you haven't then just buy the volume it's relatively cheap anyway and it definitely won't disappoint! But if you're still on the fence about spending your money on some "questionable" manga then, go and watch some of the anime on a free-to-watch anime site or any other subscription based one whichever your means just watch it! You'll be hooked whether it sub or dub I can almost say without a doubt you'll fall in love with it! I've always been a fan of Mr. Togashi's work especially Yoshihiro's golden child Yu Yu Hakusho! Being long since established as one the best during its time both critically and commercially... well maybe that's an overstatement but it's grade A reading material and it's one of the best in my opinion, I'm not the only one here! So, all in all just let that speak volumes for itself and if somehow throughout any of this you're still not sold on HxH just ask around a anime community ('cause you're clearly a anime fan already) you'll find your answer and if you're an aspired collector like myself you'll unquestionably want this one added to your growing collection!
