On the surface, Access All Areas is primer and "how to" manual to everything that is Urban Exploration. Indeed, Ninjalicious, a founder in the world of Urban Exploration, walks through every aspect of the art with thoroughness and attention to detail. He describes the lifestyle of the explorer, skills needed to affectively infiltrate sites, and the supplies that one needs in order to ensure a safe and rewarding exploration. Ninjalicious also covers various locations that an urban explorer can venture to with personal accounts and site specific advice. The most information is divided between abandoned sites, active sites, construction sites, drains, and utility tunnels. However, various special sites that urban explorers can visit are also covered adequately in their own section. Those looking for an instructional introduction to Urban Exploring will be satisfied. However, Access All Areas is also excellent for its deeper themes.
Ninjalicious' work is also a commentary on our society. Many of us live our lives without observing. The places in which we live, work, and carry out our daily lives are designated to us at every turn. We are told where we can and can't go, and, for the most part, we obey these orders and instructions mindlessly, never thinking about what lies beyond the "do not enter" and "prohibited" signs. Ninjalicious encourages us to move beyond this social and societal numbness and truly see the urban world around us. Even if one only reads this book and never explores for themselves, an "arm-chair urban explorer" if you will, they will certainly gain a wider and more awe-inspired view of the everyday world around them.
Lastly, Access All Areas reads like a memior, given the history behind its writer. Ninjalicious died of terminal cancer back in 2005. This was his final love letter to the hobby he loved, the people who participated in it with him, and to all those who would be introduced to the hobby through his writing. At the end of the book Ninjalicious states that "it's amazing to watch people get excited about the idea of really seeing the world around them, and my greatest ambition for this book is that it will have the same effect on some of those who read it."
This book definitely fulfills that goal.

Learn the basics of roof and tunnel hacking. Start thinking about your cover for action and quick changes. Not up to date as it relates to tech, copyright says 2005. Nice guy ethics. A good jumping off point.

Lots of tips and anecdotes about urban exploration. Not particularly technical. Reader should search for modern authors such as Deviant Ollam on physical penetration testing techniques for more technical treatment. Author passed away some years ago and therefore may not address certain modern considerations, but probably still useful for many situations. Overall a very good book that should be part of the explorer's library.

Ninjalicious (RIP) shares insights about the hobby of urbex using humor and straightforward language. You really get a good feel for the attitude of urban explorers (in general) - the care true urbex practitioners take to not disturb sites or people in them, the concern for ethics (if not legality), the fascination with history and general curiosity that motivate them. Anyone who takes pictures of urban ruins should read this book, whether or not they're interested in the "exploration" part - because it explicates an ethos that I think anyone shooting photos in ruin sites ought to put into practice as well. For the reader interested in looking at ruin photos, this book also offers insights into the question of whether the photos you're looking at are exploitative in nature or really come from an interest in the sites.

I've first discovered Urban Exploration by accident: While walking on a newly-built bridge in my hometown, a friend of mine and I found a way to get inside the bridge. It was really fun, and I thought to myself - there must be some kind of hobby of doing things just like this. A few days of googling later, I found this book and ordered it. Since then, my friends and I have been to quite a few UrbEx locations, and generally followed Ninjalicious' tips. All the tips are well written and well thought-out, and reading the book also teaches you a bit about how to actually find such locations.

UrbEx is indeed a bit dangerous, but it's a great thrill. And with this book, you can get to know exactly what you can do and what you feel comfortable doing - and then know exactly how to do it.

Not that great of a read.

Not only is this entertaining and interesting as an urban explorer's guide, but it's also a great writing resource for authors who might not be entirely savvy at sneaking around. Say you're writing about a character on a urban treasure hunt. If you're the kind of author who has a bit of difficulty doing your own "research," Ninjalicious details plenty of ways that will give you ideas on how someone might pull off such a thing, all told in a wonderfully entertaining style with lots of great stories for inspiration.

Hopefully this book will do more for you than just provide "research," though. Hopefully you will be inspired to try some out yourself. Because if Ninjalicious taught us anything, it's that life is short and there are so many wonderful things to see and places to go right under our noses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Physical Pentest Tips to Extrapolate

I've read several books dedicated to Physical Red Team and/or Black Team Penetration Testing, but none offered new students of the profession anything as good as the advice in this book. I'm not an Urban Explorer, but rather an experienced physical pentester and would recommend this book to anyone breaking into physical penetration testing scene.
It's humorous anecdotes underpin a reasonable methodology that is easily adapted to be applicable in ethical social engineering and physical testing scenarios (where the scope allows).
I enjoyed the parallels of Urban Exploration to my career path. A most entertaining read.

Man muss sich fast kurz fassen, ACCESS ALL AREAS spricht für sich: wer sich für das faszinierende Thema "Urban Exploration" interessiert kommt an diesem Buch nicht herum! Punkt.
