The cinematographer is responsible for the look of the film. They take the work of the art director and they turn it into reality. Knowledge of composition, lighting, and story is all necessary for the style of the film to fit within the context of the narrative.

The Batman cinematographer, Australian-born Greig Fraser, has a prolific background in cinematography with 28 credits to his name. His genius with the camera has been highly regarded among film critics who praise his work with light and composition.

Dune (2021)

Released in 2021 and directed by Denis Villeneuve, the film Dune made news coverage with a film quality specifically built to be viewed in IMAX theaters. Based on the novel by Frank Herbert in 1965, Villeneuve followed iconic director David Lynch's 1984 adaptation of the same novel. Dune (2021), follows Timothée Chalamet as the lead Paul Atreides who journeys to a dangerous planet in this sci-fi adventure.

The gorgeous composition and artistic foundation of the film proved to be an enormous success among movie lovers. Similar to The BatmanDune makes use of a cool blue and light orange palette. The success of the cinematography in Dune won Greig Fraser an Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Critics had a lot to say about this addition to the Star Wars franchise directed by Gareth Edwards. A prequel to Star Wars: Episode IV- A New Hope (1977) directed by George Lucas, Rogue One follows Jyn and a team of rebels in their effort to steal the Death Star schematics. Although a relative success, critical reception was aimed at the rushed presentation and poorly constructed plot.

However disappointed some fans and critics seemed to be, one thing most people seemed to agree upon was the gorgeous cinematography of the film. Greig Fraser did not disappoint in the cinematic representation, with shots that integrated the intensity of the film into the core of the artistic rendition.

Vice (2018)

Adam McKay's 2018 film Vice left critics incredibly divided. Despite mixed reception, this satirical political biopic of Dick Cheney, the powerful Vice President under President George W. Bush, was nominated for an extensive number of awards including six Golden Globe nominations and eight Oscar nominations.

Regardless of critical reception, Vice is undoubtedly an expertly filmed motion picture. Greig Fraser pulls off an incredible cinematic rendition yet again.

Lion (2016)

Lion is a film directed by Garth Davis and starring Dev Patel which follows the story of a five-year-old Indian boy who becomes lost, is adopted by an Australian family, and as an adult, tries to find the family he lost. Based on Saroo Brierley's autobiographical novel A Long Way Home, the film was well-received and nominated for six Oscars.

The gorgeous cinematography of this film had Greig Fraser nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography, though he lost to La La Land (2016), he did end up winning the ASC Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography.

Zero Dark Thirty (2012)

This historical rendition of the decade-long manhunt for Osama bin Laden, terrorist leader of al-Qaeda was directed by Kathryn Bigelow and was an incredible success, nominated for 130 awards, and winning 30. The film attracted a lot of media attention with several controversies surrounding the supposed acquisition of classified materials.

Greig Fraser's work on Zero Dark Thirty had him nominated for four awards in cinematography and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Cinematographer.

Foxcatcher (2014)

Foxcatcher is a 2014 drama directed by Bennett Miller and starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo. This story, based loosely on historical events, follows wrestling champions Mark and Dave Schultz who join John E. du Pont's wrestling team named Team Foxcatcher.

The film was a critical success and was nominated for five Academy Awards. Greig Fraser's work in cinematography was praised by critics who largely enjoyed the visual style.

Killing Them Softly (2012)

Directed by Andrew Dominik and starring Brad Pitt, this film is based on George V. Higgins' 1974 novel Cogan's Trade and follows two hitmen who are ordered to go after three men who steal from a mob-protected gambling operation.

Although one of Fraser's earlier works, his voice still comes through clearly. Stills of Killing Them Softly show the developing use of silhouette that Fraser will eventually become known for.

Snow White And The Huntsman (2012)

Snow White and the Huntsman was directed by Rupert Sanders, the director of 2017 Ghost in the Shell starring Scarlett Johansson. The film, an adaptation of Snow White, was a box office success though it was highly criticized by viewers and critics alike.

However, one overwhelming success of the film was the style and the tone. The cohesive visual experience of Snow White and the Huntsman left audiences enchanted.  The successful production design was enhanced by Fraser's work as cinematographer.

Let Me In (2010)

Let Me In was directed by The Batman director Matt Reeves. This remake of the Swedish film Let the Right One in (2008) directed by Tomas Alfredson, which in turn was based on John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel of the same name, follows a bullied twelve-year-old boy named Owen who befriends a young vampire girl. The film was a critical success, receiving acclaim and numerous awards.

This was Reeves' first production working with Greig Fraser and he chose to reach out to Fraser after seeing his work on Bright Star (2009). Reeves was impressed with Fraser's use of light in the film. After Let Me In, it would be over a decade before they work together on The Batman.

Bright Star (2009)

This period piece was an Australian production directed by Jane Campion, the director of 2021 The Power of the Dog. The film is a biographical exploration of English poet John Keats and his relationship with Fanny Brawne. The film was a remarkable success, garnering incredibly favorable reviews amongst critics.

Fraser gorgeously implements natural lighting into the fabric of the film, utilizing vibrant and light colors reflective of the poetic tone. The success of his cinematography won him the Australian Cinematographers Society Award and the AACTA Award for Best Cinematography. The success of his work garnered critic and audience attention and would set the tone of his success for years to come.
