About
Reservations are required to visit this garden. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden in Seal Harbor, Maine was created between 1926 and 1930 by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller and noted garden designer Beatrix Farrand. Set within acres of moss-carpeted woods, the garden is designed to be at floral peak in August. Its unique atmosphere is derived from a combination of Eastern statuary with a border garden in which perennials build the foundation of the flower beds and annuals provide an explosion of color.

Just the drive up to the parking lot for these gardens is worth the trip. The forest is perfect and the green moss covering the forest floor gives you an otherworld experience. It’s so beautiful. Then the gardens, they are truly exquisite. I am not a gardener, but it made me want to go to the nursery and buy sooo many flowers to try to grow them. The really nice thing is that all the plants are labeled, so if you want to look for specific ones, you know what they are. You do have to make a reservation fairly early as the entrance days and times are limited, however, it does help to give everyone who is there plenty of space to see everything. Five star experience!

The museum and nature trail are a good bet for city dwellers. No charge for the walk. Small charge for very small museum.

Try to go once a year for the sheer beauty and definitely to take friends who are up. Make your reservations on line well in advance. July and August only. Bring your camera.

We were fortunate to get a private tour of the Rockefeller garden, late in the season, when the garden was already starting to close down for the winter (some of the old Korean statues were already boxed). This might have influenced my opinion, but we were more dazzled by the nearby Asticou and Thuya gardens, which were still going strong. But while in this trio of splendid gardens, this is the viola, it's still impressively beautiful, with a lot of fascinating architecture and rich beds of flowers. On the Acadian evidence, I would rate Savage as a genius and Farrand (the designer of the Rockefeller Garden) as very very talented - Mozart v. Haydn. Not bad!
It's only open a few days in the summer, and by reservation only.

This is a secret to most visitors to Acadia NP and Mount Desert Island. While it's not easy to visit, it is worth the effort. It's only open to visitors one day of the week in late July, August and early September. You need to make a reservation well in advance.

We had a fantastic day strolling the gardens. The spectacular Delphiniums were at least 6 feet tall. The Clematis vines trained to grow horizontally were very unique. The staff was friendly and helpful.

So in 2008 we went here because our friend needed to find an activity that we had not done in the 20 years we had been visiting. What a find! We were fortunate to see the garden in full bloom. Take your shoes off and feel the most amazing lush clean springy grass ever felt under foot. Take in the history of the statuary. Find peace on the spirit path. Marvel at the carpet of moss. This is a lovely garden. If you miss it go to the Thuya gardens for a similar treat.

This Garden is only open on Thursday in the summer (rain or shine) and you must get a reservation ahead of time but it is definitely worth the planning! It is an unbelievable garden that was once part of the Rockefeller estate as a cutting garden for the house. It has many statues from their trips to China & Korea along with so many different varieties of flowers. It was a truly enjoyable 2 hours that is hard to describe! We would all return again another summer.
