No way for me to be even close to objective about something like this, charming and funny even when it does reveal itself as essentially a feature-length collection of eccentricities. At its best it's a worthy followup to Young Frankenstein, and it's fun to imagine Wilder carving out a whole career for himself gently spoofing various pieces of beloved mystery-horror-thriller literature for the next couple of decades. Madeline Kahn and Marty Feldman deserve to be carved into Mt. Rushmore.

I'd always thought the rather unwieldy and only sporadically funny Haunted Honeymoon (1986) was Gene Wilder's directorial debut - maybe because it feels a bit amateurishly put together. But in fact, it was his fifth (and final) film. His debut came 11 years earlier and, given the cast and subject matter, I am still scratching my head as to how I had never heard of this until last week.

objectively stupid comedies made in the 70s are just funnier and more enjoyable than objectively stupid comedies made today, i don't know how to explain this.
This will always be a personal favorite of mine and still holds up as a delight. An odd, elegant peek into the weird and wonderful mind of Gene Wilder and although some of the gags are hit or miss, when they hit, they hit hard.
Ultimately it feels more like a stitched together, inventive showcase of skits to allow Wilder's favorite collaborators to comprehensively show off their talents. It may not all work, some things might go on too long, half of it may feel made up on the fly, but hey - it just wants to follow cartoon logic, and be a fun, wild, woolly old time.
Gene Wilder was like "I'm just gonna make a movie with all my friends where I get to sing multiple times" and I'm okay with that!

Re-watch with Wilder's commentary. Sparse at times, but he has a fondness for his first film in the director's chair and real warmth for those who helped him make it. Tellingly, the person he's most critical of -- apart from one actor he singles out for being particularly difficult -- is himself. On a few occasions he chides himself for trying too hard to be a leading man and forgetting he's in a comedy. Then again, as he says early on, "I think I like mysteries more than I like comedies."
Gene Wilder in his debut as a director was coming off his appearances in Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein and clearly the Mel Brooks style of absurd nutty slapstick visual humor came along with him. Brooks was a believer that you had to try for a laugh every few minutes if not more - some land, some don't - but you keep feeding the audience. Honestly, I went into this dreading the idea - but it is Sherlock Holmes - or at least his brother - and I will watch anything Sherlock.
