For their honeymoon, newlyweds Cliff and Cydney head to the tropical islands of Hawaii. While journeying through the paradisaical countryside the couple encounters Kale and Cleo, two disgruntled hitchhikers and Nick and Gina, two wild but well-meaning spirits who help guide them through the lush jungles. The picturesque waterfalls and scenic mountainsides quickly give way to terror when Cliff and Cydney learn of a grisly murder that occurred nearby and realize that they're being followed by chance acquaintances that suspiciously fit the description of the killers.

Unexpectedly enjoyable and tightly plotted, David Twohy proves he's more than Vin Diesel's lap dog. It's a shame he hasn't directed more movies since impressing so much with early offerings Pitch Black and The Arrival. Even on a re-watch there's surprisingly little opportunity to pick at potential plot holes, such is it's solid structure, aided by satisfying performances from the core cast. No mean feat when it's basically a compact chase through some woods. Slick.

“He’s really hard to kill.”
Though it could’ve eased up a bit on the winky meta stuff, this contains no less than three separate Timothy Olyphant heat checks, and that’s not including the spot on Bruckheimer era Nic Cage impersonation he tosses off during the opening twenty minutes*. Certainly helps that the movie surrounding Olyphant is also interested in having as much fun as possible, and never really delivering much more than a gorgeously shot cheap thrill. Ranks with BELOW on the list of David Twohy movies that deserve far more love than they’ve ever received. The final third is a dopamine rush of ingeniously edited cinematic sleight of hand that would make De Palma go “holy mackerel”.
*Neat to consider that he starred in this shortly after DEADWOOD’s third season concluded and a year before JUSTIFIED began.

This movie is bullshit. Complete. Fucking. Bullshit. The definition of "dishonest storytelling."
To get it out of the way, the setup for The Perfect Getaway concerns a honeymooning couple backpacking in Hawaii. In the middle of their hike through the mountains, they learn about a recent double-murder that happened on the islands...committed by a man and a woman who are apparently still on the run. They soon bump into two different couples, one of them rather aggressive and the other a bit too eccentric.
The first hour plays like a game of "are they or aren't they" as the central couple frantically tries to figure out what to do. The eccentric couple they've paired up with is more and more…

A few days off watching films (or anything) after a new baby arrival ended by a film we only watched a few weeks ago anyway. Well, it was on Channel 5 and there was nothing else on.
It's really good and rewards repeat viewings despite knowing the twist but it's only when you rewatch it that you realise there are almost no holes to pick in the film before the twist / revelation. It really is as intricately plotted as you could ask for from a film such as this.
Plus, Steve Zahn really is a terrific and reliable actor, isn't he? Not a guy you're going to ask to headline a film, usually, but here he shows he is strong enough given the right material. I place this next to Triangle as a mystery thriller released in the last couple of years or so that deserved a much better reception and audience.
