Beautiful, not sappy Christmas stories. Katherine Paterson is one of Amerca’s greatest living writers. These stories are filled with a profound and realistic faith.

This book (the shorter version - selected stories) was marketed to 3rd graders via the Scholastic newspaper commonly distributed at elementary schools. I found this book to be completely inappropriate for 3rd graders. Many of the characters were extremely disrespectful and rude, and there were several inappropriate themes and inappropriate language. (My daughter doesn't read books that use the "rhymes with witch" word). In addition, several stories crossed the line when talking about a certain Christmas figure that a lot of children happily believe in. Perhaps adults or older teenagers would enjoy this book, but in terms of elementary school aged children, I would discourage reading it.

Katherine Paterson has such great insights, and writes beautifully. Her Christmas stories are an annual part of my celebrations.
