Plot – Sergeant William T. Santiago, a Marine of the US base in Guantanamo Bay, died during an unofficial 'disciplinary' action called 'code red', conducted by sergeant Louden Downey and Private Harold W. Dawson. The case is given to the young Navy Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, assisted by the captain of the Disciplinary Committee Joanne Galloway - a pretty and determinated woman - and a friend of Kaffee, Captain Jack Ross. During the trial and the parallel feverish enquiry it turns out that Santiago was in peers and superiors’ bad graces because of his poor fighting skills. He had also asked to be transferred, going over his superiors’ head and promising some revelations about an incident at the fencings in which Downey was involved. It also turns out that Colonel Nathan R. Jessup, previously contacted in Cuba, lied about at least two points: it had never ordered the transfer of Santiago with the 6 A.M. flight as he said and, actually, he had hidden the plans of a night flight with the same destination that would have saved Santiago. The only one who could shed light on the facts, Jessup’s vice Matthew Markinson, is nowhere to be found.
