About
We offer lunch and dinner six days a week. Join us for our breakfast on Saturday and Sunday - we also offer a breakfast buffet on weekends until noon. We have roof top and sidewalk dining. Check our weekly live music. Located in 150 year old building at the corner of Middle and South Front Street in Historic Downtown New Bern. We have been in operation since 1999 as a restaurant. The building has been a clothing store, drug store, news stand, nautical gifts and restaurant over the last 150 years. We serve American cuisine (burgers, steaks, seafood (grilled and fried), and salads with rooftop dining in the warm months. Enjoy our soup and salad bar. Locally owned and operated since opening on October 2, 1999.

We weren't starved so popped in for a glass of wine and a bite to eat. I wanted fried tomatoes. Ratty's serves them with mozzarella. The tomatoes were crunchy but the breading was tasty. The basil looked freeze dried. I'm not sure the caprese interpretation with fried tomatoes really works. My husband had the shrimp and grits which was just ok. The shrimp was rubbery. Service was attentive but the place was empty at 6.

In New Bern for the day, my wife and I were walking through the downtown area looking for a lunch spot. Most restaurants had menus posted outside, and we chose Captain Ratty's based on their menu options. We were seated right away and reviewed the menu one more time. Our server, Amber, took our drink order, and we were ready with our food order, as well. We shared a sandwich entree, as we do on the road: the unique Fried Green Tomato BLT, with a side of sweet potato fries. We chatted a bit with Amber as she cleaned tables in the area near our table next to the front window. The food arrived quickly, and Amber suggested and supplied some honey mustard as a dip for our fries...it was great! We had a fun lunch break here!

After being told at the restaurant next door there would be an hour and a half wait we went to Captain Ratty’s and were seated right away. So happy it turned out that way. We had a great table, with very efficient service, and delicious shrimp and grits. We would happily eat here again.

The worst service we have ever experienced in a restaurant - from the time we walked in the door it was total confusion on the part of the staff to the final exit we were begging to pay someone. The clam chowder and tacos tasted good and were reasonably priced but we will not return due to bad service.

Service has been excellent. The shrimp and grits had good size shrimp and the flavors were well blended. Lava cake and carrot cake were both excellent with good portions.

This was my first time in New Bern and my first night out for dinner. I received a suggestion to go here from my realtor. I arrived at 8 pm on a Thursday night. It was cold outside and the restaurant had almost no one in it. I had looked at the menu prior on-line and had a pretty good idea what I wanted. The server came promptly and I decided on the mussels as an appetizer. She said it would be large and it was. I also ordered the special which was blackened sea bass. The mussels came and there were 15 in a large bowl! Appetizer? They were fabulous! Unfortunately, my entrée came when I was only half done with the mussels, so it sat there getting cold while I finished the appetizer. I had said nothing about being in a hurry, so my only conclusion could be that the kitchen was in a hurry to clean up and shut down and kind of "rushed me out." The sea bass was good, but not fantastic, and the grilled veggie side was used as a base for my fish causing me to wonder if I got a side. My rating was due mainly to the service. Mussels alone were a 5 star!

Had a lovely lunch here today. Two had Clam Chowder and two had Fish & Chips. Both menu items were thoroughly enjoyed. Everything was fresh and delicious: cooked just as we wanted. Helpful waitress who was quick and efficient. Great place to go.

This was my second time at Capt Ratty’s. The first was pretty blah but I wanted to give it a second chance in case it was an ‘off’ day. It wasn’t. The food was just tasteless… and it was quite expensive. We were four people. Three of us didn’t finish our meals.

Great spot for seafood. I had grilled shrimp and others had the fish and chips. All were very good and the server was delightful. Very friendly!
They had great drinks from the bar and try the New Berner cocktail. Very tasty.

Arrived around 5 PM for Diner and was seated right away. We had some Fried Green Tomatoes as an appetizer, the wife ordered Salmon with a baked potato and I ordered the Fish & Chips Diner with sweet potato fries & a trip to the salad bar. The wife enjoyed her meal and I enjoyed my fish and salad. The only thing I did not like was the sweet potato fries. I do not like doggy fries and these fries looked like they were soaked in grease. Restaurant could do better. We will be back and hope to see better sweet potato fries being served.

Good for a quick lunch in casual atmosphere. We had just arrived in NewBern and wanted lunch. We walked by Captain Ratty's and decided to take a chance. We were pleasantly surprised. They were extremely busy as it was right after July 4, but the service and food were good. It's a casual and somewhat noisy environment but was perfect for lunch.

My wife and I ate lunch at Captain Ratty’s in early July 2023. There was a small wait of 10 minutes, which was to be expected based on where the restaurant is, how many other restaurants were somehow closed, and the number of people in the old town area of New Bern. The atmosphere is pretty basic. There was plenty of parking within a block or so. Service was good. We were seated around the 10 minute mark and seen by our waitress pretty soon after for our drink order. She came back for the food order fairly quickly and visited several times during the meal for drink refills. I ordered the 2-basket (scallops and shrimp) with onion rings as the side. My wife got the soup/salad bar. The salad bar was fresh and had a decent number of offerings. The soup was just ok and pretty salty. In the 2-basket, the shrimp were alright. Pretty small and nothing to write home about. The onion rings were ok, but a little underdone. The star of the meal was the scallops, which were surprisingly a decent size and tasted very good. We were overall satisfied and unintentionally ended up here to eat again the next day for a late lunch of the club sandwich (ok, but a little small and only one layer, not the traditional two) and the beef quesadilla (tasted good and a decent amount of meat). I would not make a special trip, but if you are in the area, this would be a good choice for mid-level American fair and I would check it out.

We visited during lunch and the restaurant was not busy, was seated at a table in the middle of the room by the bar. We sat there and got drink orders, and then became invisible. We sat and watched other people being seated way after us, getting their drinks, then ordering for food, meanwhile, we sat and watched. After a while, we got up and walked out. Too many places to eat to have service like that. Went down the street to MJ’s and was greeted, seated and order placed like a lunchtime restaurant should operate.

Highly recommend the calamari - delicious! However, the oysters overcooked. The salad bar was a nice add. I ate there 2 years ago & it was delicious. Today just ok. The wait staff friendly.

Went for lunch ordered the shrimp tacos which were not cleaned how disgusting is that. Couldn’t even eat it they did take it off the bill food isn’t what it use to be the server was great wish I could say better about our meals
