My overall experience in New Bern would be 10/10. I love the downtown area it's very beautiful and filled with historical sites. The downtown area also has the best restaurants! One of my faves would Bakers Kitchen.
I’ve had a lot of experience in, New Bern. I like that it has a lot of historical background to it but I would like to see more things that teenagers can go to because there isn’t much that teenagers can do because they took almost all the fun places like the bowling alley because it went out of business and all we have now really that I know of is a indoor roller skating rink. But we have events that go on so it kind of makes up for it and I understand why they don’t have certain things but some people can get bored easily or might not be interested in historical things. We have parks to go to and we have a Art Museum downtown. You also get to meet many people including elderly people who are sometimes very sweet and welcoming to the community. Great outdoor activities and lots of art downtown.
New Bern has small town charm, but with options for things to do. The beach is a quick 40 minute drive. The river flows right through town if you like activities on the water. There are lots of restaurants for any palette. Nightlife is decent, there are quaint places to grab a cocktail or bars with live music/DJs.
New Bern is mostly ever fast food you could think of and overpriced motels. There is nothing to do unless you are a bar hopper. The is NOTHING for kids other then parks. New Bern news boast about New Bern but a lot of residence like myself know they are full of it. If you do decide to move her be aware that when the city provides utilities to your home and you are a renter, your deposit is based off previous tenant who could have 7 people in one house with a high electric bill. There is one constant in New Bern and that is the high amount of drugs and arrest. This is NOT a retirement community. It used to be years ago. The twin rivers meet and it is nice going out on a boat but you share the water with alligators. My advice do your homework before you move to this crappy town. One more thing, if you are low income please note, medicaid (welfare) only gives men family planning and no other health insurance. If you are a gay couple, had a vasectomy or don't want kids, you are SOL!
When you see nice houses for 350k it’s a dangerous place to live in the US period we left ! You know an area is much safer when a home in the US is 600k or more with high taxes …
I've resided in New Bern for almost two years. I've lived in Texas, Florida, and California. New Bern, NC is my favorite place to live out of all of these places. The strangers and people I have come to call friends are all friendly, caring, and hard-working individuals. Nature is everywhere and there are plenty of places to visit to hike. Traveling to the city is only 45 minutes to a couple of hours away depending on where one would like to go.
I have enjoyed being apart of the New Bern community for the last couple of years. Being a military spouse makes it very difficult to make new friends and to feel 'at-home.' I am truly lucky to be able to call this cute, quite, little town my home for the next couple years. Things that I enjoying doing around the area include downtown and the fun events hosted. Art shows, concerts in the park, MumFest, and last but not least where I met a lot of my friends Run Club at the different breweries downtown.
New Bern, NC is a great place to call home with its beautiful small city lights and its charming country sides. It's a great place to grow up, raise children and retire. The best part about living in NB is the waterfront views and its breath taking sunrises and sunsets!
This town has a strong sense of community, where neighbors know each other and come together to support one another. It provides a very friendly and supportive environment. New Bern is the second-oldest colonial town in North Carolina with many beautiful historical buildings and cemeteries. It's a learning experience every time you go downtown. There is also a huge waterfront park where the community is able to come together for the many events that we have throughout the year. My favorite thing to do in the summertime is to go to all of the little shops downtown; you can really make a whole day out of it! The parking is honestly the only thing I would change. With all of the events and festivals that go on, it would be helpful if we had more parking areas.
Over the past few years it’s become overrun with trash bars and gets dicey at night. The village feel is eroding as the retail is disappearing and being replace by hit and run strip mall facilities like hair cutters and low end bars. People sleeping in their cars, drug users migrating downtown subsidizing their drug habit with food from a church that thinks they’re doing good, and so much smoking on Middle Street it smells like and ash try. It not the nice place it was a mere 4 years ago.
New Bern is a waterfront town that has a good amount to offer. This town is known for its history and views.
If you’re looking for an affordable town near the coast this is probably your best bet. It’s a great place for retirees, young families, and people who love being near the water. The Neuse and Trent Rivers come together here and creates some great sights. There’s a decent amount of restaurants and stores. The downtown is special and there are many parks. You’ll be about an hour away from most of the beaches such as Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle. The town lacks entertainment options and other cities might be a better fit. Most jobs here revolve around education and healthcare. If you’re looking to be closer to the beach/around a more commercialized area; look at Wilmington or Morehead City.
New Bern is truly a hidden gem! It feels like living in a Hallmark town. Beautiful downtown on the water, lots of friendly people and a relaxing, small town vibe. We moved here 5 years ago and absolutely love it! It's safe, charming and there's no traffic! The nearest "big cities" are Raleigh which is 2 hours away, and Wilmington which is 1 1/2 hours. The beach is about a 45 minute drive and the water is beautiful and warm. What more could you want?
New Bern is the hidden gem of Eastern North Carolina and I have called it home for over 10 years. It is the perfect place to raise a family or retire in.
I honestly enjoy New Bern and all of the things they have to offer here. They offer great jobs with the help of NC Works and great schooling.
Lots of nice old town stuff to see in new Bern and would be a great tourist location. Unfortunately there isn’t much to do for the locals to do besides pointlessly go to random places.
New Bern is a place for retired military or older individuals looking for a quite place to settle down. I would not recommend it for those who have children, since there are not many options around town to entertain/occupy a child of any age. There are place but not many.
