One of the worst gay-themed novels I have ever read. The author must have used the phrase "bulging muscles" over 100 times. Additionally, the description of a certain type of hospital that apparently existed clandestinely, as late as 1980, is way over the top, as just one example of the many absurd excesses in this book.
Everything here is a stereotype on top of another stereotype. Characters have names that are similar (Brandon and Brendan) for no logical reason. I did not realize that this was part of a series, so certain things I wanted to learn about never got resolved.
There are a couple of reasons I gave it more than 1 star. First, I actually liked the device he used for changing the narrator (and thus, point-of-view) by chapter. If the writer were more accomplished it would have had a far greater impact as a device. Second, I did appreciate the fact that not everything had to have tragedy attached, even if the story was more implausible than a Disneyland cartoon in many of its plot elements.
Still, it is sad when a novel makes gay-themed content like the "Eating Out" series of movies, appear deep, by comparison.
