A Chinese national was stabbed to death in south east London, detectives have revealed with the chief suspect a student who attended the same university.

Zhe Wang, 31, was found injured inside a house on Manor Park, Hither Green, Lewisham shortly before 11.15pm on March 20.

Police were alerted to reports of a stabbing and responded with paramedics. Officers forced entry to the address.

Ms Wang was found inside and died at the scene a short time later.

Formal identification is yet to take place.

The Metropolitan Police said the Chinese national was studying in London and her next of kin are being supported by specially trained officers.

American national Joshua Michals, who was living in Deals Gateway in Lewisham, was charged with murder on Friday.

Police believe the defendant and victim were known to each other. Both were students at Goldsmiths College.

In a statement, the college said: “It is with sadness that we confirm that a student at Goldsmiths has died.  We are working to support the student's family and friends at this very sad time.

“We also confirm that a student has been charged with murder. We request that the privacy of our students and staff is respected at such a sensitive time.”

“As this is now part of the legal process we are not able to make any further comment.”

The 24-year-old appeared in custody at Bromley Magistrates' Court on Saturday and then at the Old Bailey on Wednesday.

A trial is set for January 2025.

Chief Superintendent Louise Sargent, responsible for local policing in Lewisham, previously said: “Tragically overnight a woman has been killed and we do not underestimate the impact this has on the local community and those who knew the victim.

“All of our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends as we do everything we can to support detectives as they go about their enquiries.

“Please do speak with officers if you need to or contact your local policing team.”

Anyone who with information should call police on 101, quoting 8153/20MAR.
