- LongfordTampa, FL2,158 contributionsFor a city of 390,000, Zacatecas has a surprisingly rich cultural scene and excellent museums. This is a destination overlooked all too often by foreign tourists. I am in Zacatecas for a visit and though I had been to this museum previously, I was so impressed I wanted to pay a return visit.
There is no doubt Rafael Coronel (d. 2019) was an extraordinarily talented artist. Viewing his works is enjoyable. But for me the real draw to the museum is its extensive collection of masks from throughout the regions of Mexico.
One could easily spend a couple of hours wandering the museum. As I made my way through the mask collection, I was struck by how badly curated they seem to be, now. Haphazard organization and display - of many. Poor lighting - in most areas. I have seen many Mexican mask displays so maybe I am being a bit too critical. I recommend a visit to the museum if you find yourself in Zacatecas - one of Mexico's cultural gems.

It is modern and I might have liked somewhere else, but nor after looking at the outside. It is a matter of taste, but I did not see the reason for the cahnge.Written January 6, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Patrick R45 contributionsI enjoy my afternoon visiting this muséum. I heard about it but better than expected mainly due to the temporal exhibition with Fulgencio Lazo . Very refreshing painting and sculpture . Most of the museum is dedicated to Mexican artists and they are talented as any.Written July 19, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ignacio BGuanajuato, Mexico81 contributionsWe didn't think it was an interesting option as we thought it was a local thing. We were so wrong, the collection, the presentation and the variety of items was excellent. They give you a great overview of history, mining, etc. They also have very god temporal exhibits.Written January 6, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - An0nyMsTucson, Arizona1,452 contributionsMaybe it's a coincidence that most of the 21 reader photos with this review are of the building and grounds? For a variety of amazing art, you'll do better at the Museo Pedro Coronel. I did find one work I liked: a self-portrait of the artist.Written December 15, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
