You always turn into the coolest person in the room when you say "ZZ Topp played my senior prom."

Just a ‘lil ‘ol band from Texas…Tejas

u/LordBottlecap avatar

Unless you were Scott Halpin, who would've said, "Oh, yeah? I was the spectator who took over on drums for Keith Moon when he passed out on stage in '73." Laid achieved.

We have a winner!

Apparently Merlin Olsen was an original member of the band.

Man, you’re showing our age.

u/LordBottlecap avatar

You didn't claim to have to look it up yourself... =..]

.

(But I didn't have to, either =..[ )

A bouquet of FTD flowers are coming your way

You went back for that one. Can't say too much about his acting chops but he was on an episode of Petticoat Junction.

u/SkipSpenceIsGod avatar

Can’t say much? Someone gave him his own show that lasted two seasons. 🤷🏾

u/Fabulous-Farmer7474 avatar

And that was two too many for me mais a chacun son gout. I felt the same about Fred Dryer's acting career.

When I was a kid, he was at some event and signed an autographed photo. It wasn’t a photo of him as a football player, it was him as FTD spokesperson with a floral arraignment. Now I need to find it.

Edit: spokesperson

The beginning of the beard

u/NorthNorthAmerican avatar

Frank Beard looks like Neil Peart there.

u/LukeNaround23 avatar

And he’s the only one out of the three that looks anything like a rockstar.

And the only one of the three that didn’t wear a beard

u/LukeNaround23 avatar

Yep. I love that. The band always rocked, but had a sense of humor.

And always put on a good show, I saw them several times (usually as an opener or a second act), consistently entertaining

Billy looks like a nerd, who wants to tell you about what Shakespeare really intended. Dusty looks like a foundry worker, or a janitor. Frank looks like the spirit of don't give a damn rock and roll.

Apparently Dusty was just lookin for some tush.

u/SSBN641B avatar

I always thought it was funny that when the band took a hiatus in the 70s, Dusty worked at D/FW airport handling luggage. He just wanted to feel normal.

Imagine being Billy and opening for Jimi Hendrix and then play a prom a couple years later 😅

Money green no matter the scene

Especially in Gruene

This had to have been before that. maybe they got the date wrong

Nope, he opened for Hendrix in 68, couple of shows houston and dallas with his Sidewalk band. All the accounts of this prom say it has to be 70/71’ time frame and the fact this this pic is ZZ that means after the sidewalks

If Dusty kept wearing tennis shoes, he couldn't have shot himself in the foot.

Pretty sure thats Frank Beard (drummer) in the tennis shoes, Dusty (bass) is on the left. Did I miss something?

Ironically the guy with the last name beard never really had a beard.

u/the_other_guy-JK avatar

IIRC, they had just signed their first deal the week before this?

I think they had a deal already. What happened was there was a bunch of interest in them as a local "supergroup" forming from their previous bands, so their rep was starting to blow up. Still, a gig's a gig and they played the prom.

Ahh, thank you for the refresher. I knew there was a gap somewhere in my story.

I’m pretty sure a lady at my local record shop was at one of these highschool shows, they weren’t even called ZZ Top then.

u/DirtyRatLicker avatar

I find it how much different BFG looked before the beard

u/Suspicious-Pay-5474 avatar

Eventually, unlike his cohorts, Frank Beard did not live up to his namesake

Cool picture of the guys

I remember hearing that zz top got their start as a fake version of the Zombies. Basically the zombies had broken up already when they released their magnum opus oddesy and oracle and suddenly there was tons of demand for the British band.

So several Americans bands went out and pretended to be the zombies to audiences who were I guess none the wiser

u/MrYoshinobu avatar

Such an awesome band! They were destined for greatness!

u/sfinktur avatar

That's from a fraternity dance at Tyler Junior College while recording their first album in 1970.

Dem boyz did good!

u/MShamrock8 avatar

Wow

I wonder what town this is in.

u/SkipSpenceIsGod avatar

This has to be like right after Dusty was in The Zombies. ‘Time Of The Season’ was a hit in the US in early to mid ‘69 and it was right about then that he joined “The Zombies”.

La Grange High School

Billy F. Gibbons scans prom crowd, thinks: "Every girl crazy about a sharp dressed man."

Making beautiful music with their dates too
