Your Face or Mine – returning to Comedy Central tonight (March 21) – always makes for hilariously awkward viewing.

Contestant couples appearing on the show have to rate their own physical appearance compared to both strangers and loved ones... and are even forced to decide which of them is the more attractive.

Imagine having to choose between your current partner and an ex, all with a large sum of cash on the line.

Mostly, the couples embrace the experience with good humour – with hosts Jimmy Carr and Katherine Ryan helping to break the tension with a few sharp gags.

But it turns out that things can still get a little uncomfortable on set. "There was some crying [in one episode], and someone left the stage," Ryan told Digital Spy. "We did not show that.

"We've had some rows after the fact. We need to do a follow-up and see which couples stick together or not. And maybe offer some post-show counselling or something?

"The crying was the worst one. Everybody cried that day. But you'll never see that."

Carr revealed that one married couple even broke up after putting their relationship through the wringer on Your Face or Mine.

"I mean, they got back together. But a married couple broke up directly afterwards, and it looked like they were not going to get back together. It was pretty heavy. It was fine, in the end, just a bit much on the day!

He added: "If you've got the same sense of humour as your partner, you're fine. I think in the long-term, it's fine. If you laugh together, you'll last together."

Your Face or Mine begins airing its third series tonight, with a run of celebrity specials featuring Chris Hughes & Olivia Attwood (Love Island), Marnie Simpson & Casey Johnson (Geordie Shore), Yazmin Oukhellou & James Lock (TOWIE) and Ola & James Jordan.

Surely, then, after two previous series, couples should know what they're letting themselves in for? "Yeah, but people are idiots," quipped Carr. "The worst thing is when you get someone who's quite good looking but a bit arrogant. The audience just takes against them – 'Oh, you think you're all that?'

"In this era of Snapchat and Tinder and Instagram, it feels like judging people's looks instantly is something that people are so good at now!

"Your Face or Mine is an interesting show, we play by slightly different rules. We're allowed to talk about people's looks on a show in a way that's maybe not the most PC. But it's really, really fun!"

Your Face or Mine returns tonight at 8pm on Comedy Central.
