There is no reason to fear a car-free Yonge Street, Opinion, Jan. 13
I have been a resident of downtown Toronto for more than 25 years and I have worked on and near Yonge Street for more than 30 years. I get to work by walking or by riding my bike and I also do most of my shopping on or near Yonge Street. I honestly don’t understand the position taken by some business people and BIA’s that downtown Yonge Street still needs to be predominantly a thoroughfare for cars. Most of the people using Yonge Street currently take transit, walk, or ride a bike. But the sidewalks on Yonge are far too narrow.
The public consultations on yongeTOmorrow in the past few years showed that the public overwhelmingly supports more pedestrianization of Yonge Street and car-free areas.
This would improve safety for all road users and allow more space for patios, cafés, festivals and events.
