About the Artist

Mary Karlzen and Y&T Music are proud to announce the re-release of her critically acclaimed album; "Yelling at Mary". Originally released on Atlantic Records in 1995, the album features guest appearances by Jackson Browne, David Hidalgo (Los Lobos), Benmont Tench (Tom Petty), Kenny Aronoff (John Mellancamp and Indigo Girls), Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo)and Andrew Hyra (Billy Pilgrim). The reissue includes 6 perviously unreleased bonus tracks including the beautiful "Hearts" with Raul Malo (of The Mavericks). Produced by Kevin McCormick (Melissa Etheridge, Jackson Browne), the album was embraced by major music critics across the country and the video for "I'd Be Lying" was on regular rotation on VH1, MuchMusic, CMT and The Nashville Network. Mary is also a featured artist on both of Atlantic's top selling Christmas albums; "You Sleigh Me" and "Winter, Fire & Snow". As a performer, Mary has shared the stage with some of the preeminent songwriters of our generation including Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Jackson Browne, Nanci Griffith, Lucinda Williams, Indigo Girls and many others.

A small sampling of reviews for "Yelling at Mary"

"Karlzen never sounds like an imitator; she seems more like the equal of Sheryl Crow and Nanci Griffith. If you listen closely, in fact, you'll find that Karlzen rocks harder and more infectiously than her better known colleagues" - GEOFFREY HIMES - Washington Post

"This refreshing major-label debut is a polished work of folk-tinged rock. - DAVID ELLIS - People Magazine

"A powerful major-label debut from a woman whose voice and songwriting display a beguiling mix of grit and grace, cynicism and childlike wonder" - Billboard Magazine

"What really pulls Karlzen out from the parade of hopeful newcomers is her lyrics" - MIRIAM LONGINO - Atlanta Journal Constitution

"Chicago native Mary Karlzen is not typical of other singer-songwriters. The wicked adventure of her soprano sets her apart from the hippie laced loops of her colleagues" - DAVE HOEKSTRA - Chicago Sun Times

I had this when it originally came out, but a former friend felt they needed more than I did. Her voice is different from others, but I found it better for that. I'm glad I found it again.

Great Album, Great Artist with a number of vastly talented friends providing a great profile of Mary’s music. Mary, Richie I’m so glad I bought the master back from Atlantic allowing you ownership of your own amazing music giving you the opportunity for the multiple RE-releases for a S FL homegirl. Haven’t seen you in a lomg while we should rectify that. R

This is a great album and I agree with the prior reviewer that it it is one that I listen to over and over, even 10 years later. While he labels it power pop, she has a diverse style and I think the album includes alt-country, folk, and rock. There are also a number of prominent guest muscians. This album and artist deserve a wider audience

This album is full of tight, distinct and interesting songs. I bought it when it came out and it sounds as good today as when it came out. It really holds up. This is one of my "go to" CD's when I know I want to hear good upbeat music. Check it out for her unique voice, solid songwriting and infectious melodies. Can't understand why she isn't better known.

When this CD came out I was a subscriber to Stereo Review and CD Review. I figured if both magazines gave a new recording a best of the month review, it was probably worth checking out. I had never heard of Mary Karlzen at the time, but the reviews were great, so I bought it. In fact, I ended up buying lots of copies for other people. Great power pop, I still play it frequently and I think that it is one of the finer recordings in my collection.

I bought this album back in 1996 because of a review I read in the Boston Globe. I still play it and I'll never understand why it didn't garner radio airplay or make Mary the breakout artist she deserved. Clever, infectious, melodic, country-rock-pop and a great supporting line up including Kay Hanley, Jackson Browne and David Hildago. If your a fan of this genre then you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Too often the best music and the best artists never make the radio airwaves. Mary Karlzen's album is among the best work in pop music in the last 15 years. My CD collection numbers more than 700 and I consider Yelling at Mary to be one of the best in the collection. Pop music melodies with deep, emotional lyrics make this album a real treasure.
