A Glimpse into Ybor City’s History

The history of Ybor City starts in the late 1880s. Founded as a company town by Vicente Martinez Ybor, it quickly became a driving force in Tampa’s growth. Cigar factories churned out a prized product which shipped around the country and earned Tampa the nickname “Cigar City”.

A true melting pot, immigrants from a number of countries moved there to work in the cigar industry or support it in other industries. Cubans, Spaniards, Germans, Italians, Jews, Chinese, and others lived side by side. They built mutual aid societies, brick buildings and factories which still stand today, and an enduring legacy of multiculturalism.

From the Great Depression through the 1970s, Ybor City’s fortunes declined. Many factories closed, organized crime took over, and it was known as a crime-ridden slum. Starting in the 1980s revitalization efforts began and the neighborhood has turned into a thriving community known for its history, great food, and vibrant nightlife.

Top Attractions to Explore in Ybor City

Filled with historic sites and unique finds around every corner, there are many things to do in Ybor City to fill a day or a weekend adventure. These are some of our favorites to fit into your schedule when visiting Ybor City.

Front of Ybor City Museum State Park

Ybor City Museum State Park

Ybor City Museum State Park occupies a former Cuban bread bakery. Exhibits throughout the space showcase Ybor City’s history from the 1880s to the present. If offered, take a tour of the historic casita, a restored worker’s cottage which shows how the cigar workers and their families lived in the 1880s and 1890s.

When you’ve reached your fill of learning about this area, take a break in the courtyard. A fountain exudes peaceful water sounds, and Ybor City’s famous chickens roam the garden beds.

La Septima/7th Avenue

La Septima, or 7th Avenue, is the main street through historic Ybor City. Visiting La Septima is a must for anyone who wants to see the old buildings, experience the nightlife, and do a little shopping.

Though there are lots of great things to do just a block or two off La Septima, this street is the iconic road seen in so many photos. Two and three story brick buildings line the street, many with wrought iron balconies overlooking the road. Palm trees line the sidewalk.

World-renowned stores, buildings, and restaurants can be found on La Septima. These include the Italian Club, Gaspar’s Grotto, and the Ritz Theater. Centro Ybor stretches from 7th to 8th Avenues with a courtyard surrounded by shops and restaurants.

The Ritz Ybor

This historic haven transports visitors to a bygone era, where the allure of vaudeville and the magic of silent cinema once captivated the senses. The Ritz Theater’s unassuming façade belies the enchantment that lies within its walls—a meticulously preserved time capsule that narrates the stories of Ybor’s cultural tapestry.

Over the years, The Ritz Ybor has served as a cinema, nightclub, and concert venue. Today, it plays host to comedians, musicians, and others who look for intimate venues to play.

Social Clubs

In Ybor City’s early days, many of the nationalities represented in the neighborhood created mutual aid societies. These were, basically, social clubs for members of that demographic. There was The Italian Club, The Cuban Club, The German-American Club, a couple of Spanish Clubs, and more.

Today, many of those still stand and are open to the public to see the magnificent architecture of the buildings inside and out. And sometimes to attend special events. The Italian Club is located in the heart of Ybor City on La Septima. The Cuban Club sits a few blocks northwest.

Take a Tour

Several companies offer guided tours of Ybor City spanning a range of interests. If seeing the historic cigar factory buildings interests you, there’s a tour for that. How about learning more about Ybor City’s haunted past? Definitely a tour or two for that. There are also food tours, history tours, drinking tours, and more.
