Teaching through stories and parables is as ancient as words. This story has much to teach, as do the other stories from time of the Baal Shem Tov, that Master of the Good Name, and Russia. Yakov, his distraught wife Olga, his son Mikhail, the Grandfather and his grandson, Pavel, and the seven thieves are magnificently drawn by illustrator Gennady Spirin. The time is the 18th century, the place a Russian village but painted as if from a medieval manuscript, the details masterfully rendered, and the characters wholly individualized. Perhaps most magnificent of all is the Angel of Death whose compassionate tender sorrow is achingly beautiful.
The story is told by Ms. Richie in the traditional cadences, her words drawing the characters as intensely as the illustrations. Her earthiness when the thieves are about contrasts with the lovelier words used for the father, the grandfather and the son, a contrast that is appropriate & effective. The thieves are not gentlemen, although their hearts can be gentled, and they themselves perhaps healed at least a little even as Mikhail was healed utterly.
Reader Alert: If, however, earthiness such as "b*lch" or "f*rt" offends, this may not be the book for some readers. If teaching values through stories of the Gates of Heaven, angels and prayer (non-denominational)offend, then this is definitely not the book for some readers.
For many readers, however, and I am among them, "Yakov and the Seven Thieves" is a treasure. A beautiful book in every way, and, at the used book prices, almost a miracle.

In her own words :
"It is a story about how all of us have the ability to unlock the gates of Heaven - no matter how unworthy we think we are. For when we go against our selfish natures, we make miracles happen, in our lives and in the lives of others."
Indeed a very great moral from a picture which is adored by the awesome illustrations of Gennady Spirin. Use the look inside feature of this book to get the feel of the illustrations. A true gift for children.
