—Xie Bi'an and Fan Wujiu (Deduction Star 2020) |
Appearance
White Guard
Bi'an is a slender and tall young man with pale bluish-white skin, small violet eyes, and long white hair with black streaks tied into a long, braided rope reminiscent of a Qing men's hairstyle. A large black mark is on the right side of his face, resembling a swirling cloud pattern.
He wears a white Chinese robe with stiff shoulder sleeves, gold pankous and hems, and a black piece of fabric over his heart, over a dark blue robe with a high mandarin collar, skin-tight black pants, and dull, dark blue fabric shoes. White linen bandages wrap around his ankles, and two leather belts are clasped around his right forearm. A bronze compass is attached to his waist, and he carries a black Chinese paper parasol with white Chinese seals attached to it in his right hand.
Black Guard
Wujiu is a slender and tall young man with greyish-black skin, small amber eyes, and long black hair with white streaks tied into a long, braided rope reminiscent of a Qing men's hairstyle. A large white mark is on the left side of his face, resembling a swirling cloud pattern.
He wears a black Chinese robe with stiff shoulder sleeves, gold pankous and hems, and a white piece of fabric over his heart, over a dark red robe with a high mandarin collar, skin-tight black pants, and dull, dark red fabric shoes. White linen bandages wrap around his ankles, and two leather belts are clasped around his left forearm. A bronze bell is attached to his waist, and he carries a black Chinese paper parasol with white Chinese seals attached to it in his right hand.
Gameplay
The Wu Chang is a versatile Hunter who can switch between their White Guard/Black Guard forms to help them in different situations. While the White Guard is a powerful chaser with his long hitbox and high movement speed, he fails in looping and tight spaces with his slow pallet breaking speed, stun time, and attack speed hence making him more suitable for transitional kiting. However, the Black Guard is the near opposite, possessing faster pallet breaking speed, stun time, and attack speed, meanwhile failing with wide areas and fast survivors due to his slow movement speed and short hitbox hence making him more suitable for tight kiting.
White Guard's exclusive ability Siphon Soul allows him to catch up to survivors quickly. Survivors caught within Siphon Soul's area for 3 seconds cannot interacts with map objects, see survivors, and hallucinate Wu Chang for 10 seconds, this can end/delay survivor's rescues and bodyblocking if done correctly.
Black Guard's exclusive ability Wavering Bell allows him to stuns survivors for a second and then prevents them from interacting with the map objects or items until their calibration is done. If the survivor continues to messed up the calibration even on purpose, their movements will be inverted making it difficult for them to retain their control.
Arguably, their most powerful skill is their ability to traverse over large distances with their Summon, capable of exerting pressure on every part of the map at almost any time, and can turn potential losses to ties and even to wins. Once their full presence is unlocked, their power level significantly increases, making most rescues, cipher pressure and kites difficult for Survivors.
As for Infinite Nirvana, they can throw their umbrella to mindgame survivors and reveal their location to them. They can choose to Summon to where the umbrella is thrown or retrieve their umbrella back once it is not needed for them to. Without their umbrella, their movement and window vaulting speed increases but they cannot attack or destroy pallets etc.

Concept / Design Notes[6]
Design Notes
Wu Chang was proposed as a "good-looking" hunter like Michiko. The clothing needs to have Chinese elements, the shape must be beautiful, and it must also conform to the style of the game and have horror elements. We referred to some ancient Chinese official uniforms, and changed the style to a more slim fit, which is a bit closer to the Western-style clothing of a short windbreaker and trousers, but elements such as breasted buttons and long braids make the characters look more Chinese. In terms of body shape, length of body, length of hands, length of legs, length of neck, both “attractive" and uncanny combine. Although the facial features are handsome, the complexion is pale, and strange tattoos add to the horror.

Trivia
- As of 2022, Wu Chang has the highest 4 survivors kill rate out of all the hunters in-game.[8]
- Contrary to a quite popular belief, Xie Bi'an (White Guard) doesn't have the longest attack range in the game, rather the 2nd longest which is beaten by The Feaster. The difference are minimal however and doesn't affect the game in any significant way.
- Despite of this, both are well-known for having long attack range but Xie Bi'an (White Guard) is more recognizable on this topic due to Wu Chang's popularity.
- Their favorite Dish are Dumplings, Fish Balls in Sauce and Mooncake, because said dishes originate from China.
- Xie Bi'an and Fan Wujiu are NOT related. They are 'Sworn Brothers' with no biological relation, and no related upbringing. Sworn brothers is a term for people working together faithfully as brothers in arms. Not necessarily actual brothers.
- Why Xie Bi'an and Fan Wujiu look Identical is currently unknown; As they are not related. However, it's heavily implied that Fan Wujiu's appearance is based on Xie Bi'an's due to the unknown process used to bring Fan Wujiu back from the dead. Xie Bi'an's body being used as some sort of catalyst; would leave both of them looking the same but incomplete. Which is hinted at by their body markings(both of their markings fitting perfectly together like a puzzle) and the B-Release costume's name 'Incomplete'. If this is true, it would mean Fan Wujiu's appearance is actually Xie Bi'an's and not his own.
- Wu Chang is based on Heibai Wuchang, a deity in Chinese folk religion.
- Xie Bi'an (谢必安) means "thankful" (谢) “certain" (必) "peace" (安).
- Fan (范) is a species of aquatic insect, Wu (无) means "without" and Jiu (咎) means "blame".
- There are other versions of the myth that refer to Wujiu as 无救, meaning "helpless" or "unsavable".
- Their Appearance mostly references Yin and Yang, a concept of dualism, describing how obviously opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another.
- White Guard/Xie Bi'an represents Yin, while Black Guard/Fan Wujiu represents Yang.
- Their Character Day is on the 15th day of the 7th month in the Chinese Lunar Calendar, making it a different day on the solar calendar each year. This day is the Chinese Ghost Festival.
- September 2nd, 2020 (1st Character Day)
- August 22nd, 2021 (2nd Character Day)
- August 12th, 2022 (3rd Character Day)
- August 30th, 2023 (4th Character Day)
- August 18th, 2024 (Upcoming 5th Character Day)
- According to the Official Identity V Museum, they are 260 cm tall (8'6).[9]
- They are the first hunter to be more than one person, the others being Dream Witch & Her Followers, and The Will Brothers of The Breaking Wheel.
- They appear in all three episodes of the stage play series produced in Japan. Xie was played by Kunishima Naoki, and Fan was played by Agata Goki. In the stage play, they cannot appear together in separate bodies, even when in the manor.
- They are the only playable character to have showroom animations for their B-tier and C-tier Costumes, including their Original Costume.
