The White and Black Guards had their souls imbued into an umbrella where they are bound together, forever.

Xie Bi'an (Chinese: 谢必安) and Fan Wujiu (Chinese: 范无咎), also known collectively as the Wu Chang or the White and Black Guards, are a Difficulty Level 2 Hunter available for purchase after the completion of the prologue. This character is one of 29 playable Hunters added to Identity V.

Don't try to find me, for my soul has drifted afar.

—Xie Bi'an and Fan Wujiu (Deduction Star 2020)

Appearance

White Guard

Bi'an is a slender and tall young man with pale bluish-white skin, small violet eyes, and long white hair with black streaks tied into a long, braided rope reminiscent of a Qing men's hairstyle. A large black mark is on the right side of his face, resembling a swirling cloud pattern.

He wears a white Chinese robe with stiff shoulder sleeves, gold pankous and hems, and a black piece of fabric over his heart, over a dark blue robe with a high mandarin collar, skin-tight black pants, and dull, dark blue fabric shoes. White linen bandages wrap around his ankles, and two leather belts are clasped around his right forearm. A bronze compass is attached to his waist, and he carries a black Chinese paper parasol with white Chinese seals attached to it in his right hand.

Black Guard

Wujiu is a slender and tall young man with greyish-black skin, small amber eyes, and long black hair with white streaks tied into a long, braided rope reminiscent of a Qing men's hairstyle. A large white mark is on the left side of his face, resembling a swirling cloud pattern.

He wears a black Chinese robe with stiff shoulder sleeves, gold pankous and hems, and a white piece of fabric over his heart, over a dark red robe with a high mandarin collar, skin-tight black pants, and dull, dark red fabric shoes. White linen bandages wrap around his ankles, and two leather belts are clasped around his left forearm. A bronze bell is attached to his waist, and he carries a black Chinese paper parasol with white Chinese seals attached to it in his right hand.

Gameplay

The Wu Chang is a versatile Hunter who can switch between their White Guard/Black Guard forms to help them in different situations. While the White Guard is a powerful chaser with his long hitbox and high movement speed, he fails in looping and tight spaces with his slow pallet breaking speed, stun time, and attack speed hence making him more suitable for transitional kiting. However, the Black Guard is the near opposite, possessing faster pallet breaking speed, stun time, and attack speed, meanwhile failing with wide areas and fast survivors due to his slow movement speed and short hitbox hence making him more suitable for tight kiting.

White Guard's exclusive ability Siphon Soul allows him to catch up to survivors quickly. Survivors caught within Siphon Soul's area for 3 seconds cannot interacts with map objects, see survivors, and hallucinate Wu Chang for 10 seconds, this can end/delay survivor's rescues and bodyblocking if done correctly.

Black Guard's exclusive ability Wavering Bell allows him to stuns survivors for a second and then prevents them from interacting with the map objects or items until their calibration is done. If the survivor continues to messed up the calibration even on purpose, their movements will be inverted making it difficult for them to retain their control.

Arguably, their most powerful skill is their ability to traverse over large distances with their Summon, capable of exerting pressure on every part of the map at almost any time, and can turn potential losses to ties and even to wins. Once their full presence is unlocked, their power level significantly increases, making most rescues, cipher pressure and kites difficult for Survivors.

As for Infinite Nirvana, they can throw their umbrella to mindgame survivors and reveal their location to them. They can choose to Summon to where the umbrella is thrown or retrieve their umbrella back once it is not needed for them to. Without their umbrella, their movement and window vaulting speed increases but they cannot attack or destroy pallets etc.

External Trait Description
DualSoul
Dual Soul
The White and Black Guards had their souls imbued into an umbrella and their souls can be switched by using Summon. The White Guard excels at patrol and pursuit and moves swiftly but has slow stun recovery and attack speed; the Black Guard excels at melee combat and has fast stun recovery and attack speed, but moves slowly.
Ability Presence Description
Summon
Summon
0 Cast this ability to switch into Dual Soul mode. Hold down this ability to charge up and toss the soul umbrella forward and then switch to Dual Soul mode and teleport to where the umbrella lands. The longer you charge this ability, the farther you can toss the umbrella and the slower the action speed. When the ability ends, the speed of the next attack and backswing will be greatly increased. Most interactions' speed will also increased by 25% for 5 seconds.
InfiniteNirvana
Infinite Nirvana
Throws the Umbrella at the target location, where it will stay for 5 seconds. Outlines of Survivors in the area covered by the Umbrella will be shown, with their movement speed and vaulting speed slightly decreased, and other interaction speeds significantly decreased. Outlines of these Survivors will still be shown for 5 seconds after they move outside the area. For the duration where the Umbrella is active, Wu Chang can choose to teleport to where the Umbrella is and switch to Dual Soul mode, or retrieve the Umbrella to recover skill countdown. Without the Umbrella, Wu Chang's movement speed and window vaulting speed is increased. The Umbrella will return to Wu Chang when the 5 seconds are up.
SiphonWaveringSoul
Siphon Soul & Wavering Soul
1000 White Guard's spirit leaves his body and won't be able to interact with anything for 5 seconds. However, White Guard's Movement Speed is greatly increased and can siphon the soul of nearby Survivors. If it manages to fully siphon a Survivor's soul, their soul will be lost. When the progress of Siphon Soul is over 70%, this ability can be canceled.
Lost Soul: Bedazzled and unable to interact with the environment for 10 seconds.

When Black Guard rings the bell and casts Wavering Soul, all Survivors that hear the ringing must steel their resolve and calibrate with precision. While calibrating, Survivor cannot use any items or active abilities. Should they fail the calibration, they will become horrified for 60 seconds; if they fail another calibration during this time, their soul will waver.
Spiritless: Movement directions will be reversed for 10 seconds.[5]

SummonEnhanced
Summon - Enhanced
2500 Reduces the time it takes to switch souls in Dual Souls mode, and you will immediately perform a powerful Siphon Soul or Wavering Soul upon switching.

Tips

Please press "Expand" to see tips about playing as and against this Hunter.

Active Traits

  • Wu Chang lacks of chasing potential for early game as none of their abilities are suitable for chasing until they fill their Hunter's Presence to Tier I to unlock Siphon Soul & Wavering Bell. It is recommended to bring Blink or Peeper to aid early game chase.
    • With Blink, you can obtain an easy free hit. This is even more effective if you can manage to perform the first jumpscare hit earlier on, allowing Wu Chang to reach to Presence Tier I to unlock new abilities.
    • With Peeper, you can also use it to put pressure on cipher machines, slow their interactions and movement speed during chasing, and gives you information if the survivor is nearby.
    • With Teleport, you can massively increase Wu Chang's map pressure since Wu Chang's Summon can traverse through a large distance.
      • Teleport also allows Wu Chang to teleport areas above them unlike Summon.

Persona Builds

  • Using Insolence to help Wu Chang to gain powerful abilities faster as they lack of chasing potential during early game.
  • Using Detention can help Wu Chang to turn the tables easily during the endgame due to their powerful map pressure.
  • If you aren't interested in camping rocket chairs, mixing Mock (Movement Speed Bonus), Berserker (Attack Recovery Bonus), and Wither (Survivor's Acceleration Reduction) together will increase Wu Chang's chasing potential a lot.
  • Wu Chang lacks of face camping ability but has a strong patrolling camping (Proxy Camping) potential. Berserker and Wither are recommended as both personas together as it gives you a chance to double hit rescuers and then use Summon towards them before they could reach to the rocket chair.
    • Using Wanted Order can force survivors to not rescue their teammate, force a nearby revealed survivor to rescue quickly, or to give intel on the rescuer's position.
    • If a survivor is rescued, Nostalgic is a decent pick as you hit the rescuer before catching up to them in an instant using Summon.
  • Confined Space can remedy Wu Chang's weak early game, as they are prone to being looped around windows.
    • Destructiveness too as most survivors prefers to drop pallets early when countering Wu Chang.
  • Impulsive is useful for White Guard's charged attack due to its long range and can remedy Black Guard's slow movement speed.

As Wu Chang

  • At the start of the match, your Summon ability is immediately ready to use. This opens up the option to immediately teleport to where the survivor is for a very quick chase initiation and an easy jumpscare hit if you use it accurately and fast enough.
    • It is only recommended to do this when you know where the survivors spawn as otherwise you may teleport to the spot where there are no survivors and you will waste a lot of time.
  • Wu Chang's ability to teleport anywhere allows him to immediately switch hunting targets. If you find a hard hunting survivors such as Mercenary, Forward or First Officer early on, waste their resources and then teleport to other survivors to chase them once the Summon's cooldown is finished.
  • Xie Bi'an (White Guard)'s Siphon Soul ability while can be used to siphon survivors' soul to disable interactions and create halucinations, it is better used as an ability for patrolling or to catch up survivors such as Forward, Toy Merchant etc. due to how long it takes to siphon a survivor's soul, easily cancelled by stuns, and you will move a lot faster than your regular movement speed.
    • Don't use Siphon Soul on areas where you are forced to vault over a window or break a pallet as you cannot manually cancel Siphon Soul until the duration is finished.
    • Siphon Soul is extremely helpful when camping as it prevents the rescuer from interacting with the rocket chair allow you to buy free time for the rocket chair countdown. Assuming that Survivors cannot cancel your Siphon Soul using stuns or distance or block you.
  • Xie Bi'an (White Guard)'s charged attack range is extremely long and can damage survivors far away but its attacking speed is slower than his normal attack. This can be useful in situation such as:
    • An open area and during transitional chasing.
    • You are confident that you can hit a survivor from afar.
  • Xie Bi'an (White Guard)'s normal attack is faster than his charged attack and has a long attack judgement but is shorter than his charged attack. This can be useful in situations such as:
    • Closed areas with pallets and windows and loop chasing.
      • Attack early before walking through a pallet (The moment White Guard pokes his umbrella) and move to where the survivor is heading to if you are against pallet campers or think that a survivor is attempting to pallet stun you.
    • If a survivor is too close from you as using a charged attack will waste more time since its animation is slower than a normal attack.
  • Fan Wujiu (Black Guard)'s Wavering Bell can shut down loop kiting as it stuns a survivor for 1 second and they can't interact with objects until they finish their calibration.
    • Do not use Wavering Bell on a survivor if they are interacting with the Window or Pallet as it doesn't stun them.
    • Do not careless walk into a pallet after stunning a survivor as survivors can purposely fail the calibration to pallet stun you.
  • Despite the ability to teleport, it is risky to teleport to exit gates and try to get another survivor when you have a survivor on chair as you're not guarding the chair, opens up the opportunity for other survivors to go rescue and make the effort of pointless.
    • However you can do this to put pressure on survivors into a philosophical and complex strategic thinking of whether to risk the rescue over and over or not which may end up backfiring to them and give you a 2nd deserved target.
      • Some players don't fall into this however and can decide immediately what to do or risk, denying this tactic's effectiveness entirely.
    • If you're using this tactic, avoid putting survivors on chairs near exit gates as this makes it very risky for the survivor on chair to be rescued and escaped.

Against Wu Chang

  • You can hear the teleportation sound from the usage of the Summon ability. Use this as a signal of 30 second-safety from Wu Chang teleporting to you.
  • Communication can ruin one of the early game options for Wu Chang as if everyone is aware that Wu Chang's going to change target, they can prepare to kite better.
  • The biggest point is kiting Wu Chang is preventing him from getting presence, as his potential in pursuit increases significantly at each presence tier.
    • Pallets and windows are best used when kiting Wu Chang. Despite the early usage, it can be justified if it prevents him from reaching tier 1 presence. A Wu Chang without presence is very easy to kite in mid-late game.
  • Mercenary can shut down one of the options to stop the rescue for Wu Chang if the hunter has Berserker and Wither personas due to the damage delay mechanic of the survivor.
    • However do not get terror shocked, doing so will still allow Wu Chang to finish you off.
  • Both forms of Wu Chang excels at 2 completely different things which requires some different tactics to counter against each of them.
    • For Xie Bi'an (White Guard) form, kite looping is key as this usually denies the long attack range of Xie Bi'an and since Xie Bi'an cannot stun survivor unlike Fan Wujiu (Black Guard) who can use Wavering Soul to stun. Xie Bi'an also has long pallet stun duration, meaning that if managed to stun him with pallet, you're guaranteed to have plenty of time to move to other areas.
      • Wu Chang players usually use Xie Bi'an form to guard survivors on chair at basement due to the ability to double hit through falling. Either bait the attack or rush through using items such as Elbow Pads can deny this.
    • For Fan Wujiu (Black Guard), stay distant from the hunter is key here as Fan Wujiu has no ability to catch up other than Nirvana to slow you down, teleport and switch form to Xie Bi'an or play mind games with you, hoping for free hit. Kite looping is still an important skill to have against Fan Wujiu but you shouldn't loop for long as stunning Fan Wujiu isn't as rewarding as stunning Xie Bi'an and all of his interactions are fast.
      • Wu Chang players usually use Fan Wujiu for chair guarding except basement where they would use Xie Bi'an. This is because Fan Wujiu has 3rd fastest blade-wipping motion animation in the game and when combined with Berserker and Wither personas, opens them up the ability to double hit and allow them to quickly catch up rescued survivor. Stealth, rush or damage denial from abilities/items would work for countering this.
  • Survivors like Enchantress and Prospector have their ability range shorter than Xie Bi'an (White Guard)'s charged attack range. Counter this by stop running to allow you to use the ability (For Enchantress) or pre-throw the magnet and then stop running to activate the repulsion before getting hit (For Prospector).
    • At the same time with these exact survivors, you can use the ability to prevent Xie Bi'an from Siphoning you using Siphon Soul ability. Do it when you're right at the kiting route however as otherwise, you're cutting your containment time shorter.
  • Any kind of stuns or movement interruptions can prevent Wu Chang from switching forms or teleporting.
  • Despite the ability to teleport, Priestress can be powerful for assisting your teammates on kiting as if the hunter is in Xie Bi'an (White Guard) form, they're more likely to accidentally destroy the passage due to their long charged attack range, forcing them to either switch form to teleport or use the Siphon Soul to catch up, both solutions are rather wasteful for ability usage.
    • This tactic is ineffective against Professional Wu Chang players as they can calculate the time of the charged attack better due to how experienced they are which makes the situation almost never happen.
  • "Prisoner" can partly counter the cipher machine control as the decoding progress transmission can confuse Wu Chang player into teleporting to the wrong cipher (The cipher with no survivor and only the connector), wasting their ability.
    • This is less effective if they switch to Xie Bi'an (White Guard) when they teleport due to the Siphon Soul ability allow for quick traveling to compensate the mistake.
    • Similar thing can be achieved with Mechanic, however it is much harder to pull of due to not being able to decode 2 ciphers simultaneously and the cipher with the doll would fail the calibration a lot, giving a dead giveaway sign to the hunter that there's a doll at certain cipher, not survivor.
  • Mercenary is Wu Chang's biggest counter as it takes away most of options Wu Chang can take with combos to advance and tip the game to their favor.
    • Despite of that, Mercenary doesn't completely dominate Wu Chang's power and still requires experience and skill to counter. Mercenary also isn't a hard counter as most of assets of Wu Chang aren't countered by Mercenary.
    • This also applies to all other counterplays of Wu Chang. Seer, Perfumer, Professor etc. All are not Wu Chang's hard counter.
  • Grave Keeper can be useful to rescue survivors from basement thanks to his Shovel. Despite this tactic can be applied to any hunter, it takes away Wu Chang's only option to efficiently guard a chair.
    • Same can be applied with Wildling and his Boar but with the fact that the Boar getting hit already doesn't trigger blade-wiping motion, making it pointless to attempt double hitting and Murro himself doesn't take any damage from it.

Concept / Design Notes[6]

Design Notes

WuChangDesignNotesRBCN

Wu Chang was proposed as a "good-looking" hunter like Michiko. The clothing needs to have Chinese elements, the shape must be beautiful, and it must also conform to the style of the game and have horror elements. We referred to some ancient Chinese official uniforms, and changed the style to a more slim fit, which is a bit closer to the Western-style clothing of a short windbreaker and trousers, but elements such as breasted buttons and long braids make the characters look more Chinese. In terms of body shape, length of body, length of hands, length of legs, length of neck, both “attractive" and uncanny combine. Although the facial features are handsome, the complexion is pale, and strange tattoos add to the horror.

Trivia

  • As of 2022, Wu Chang has the highest 4 survivors kill rate out of all the hunters in-game.[8]
  • Contrary to a quite popular belief, Xie Bi'an (White Guard) doesn't have the longest attack range in the game, rather the 2nd longest which is beaten by The Feaster. The difference are minimal however and doesn't affect the game in any significant way.
    • Despite of this, both are well-known for having long attack range but Xie Bi'an (White Guard) is more recognizable on this topic due to Wu Chang's popularity.
  • Their favorite Dish are Dumplings, Fish Balls in Sauce and Mooncake, because said dishes originate from China.
  • Xie Bi'an and Fan Wujiu are NOT related. They are 'Sworn Brothers' with no biological relation, and no related upbringing. Sworn brothers is a term for people working together faithfully as brothers in arms. Not necessarily actual brothers.
  • Why Xie Bi'an and Fan Wujiu look Identical is currently unknown; As they are not related. However, it's heavily implied that Fan Wujiu's appearance is based on Xie Bi'an's due to the unknown process used to bring Fan Wujiu back from the dead. Xie Bi'an's body being used as some sort of catalyst; would leave both of them looking the same but incomplete. Which is hinted at by their body markings(both of their markings fitting perfectly together like a puzzle) and the B-Release costume's name 'Incomplete'. If this is true, it would mean Fan Wujiu's appearance is actually Xie Bi'an's and not his own.
  • Wu Chang is based on Heibai Wuchang, a deity in Chinese folk religion.
    • Xie Bi'an (谢必安) means "thankful" (谢) “certain" (必) "peace" (安).
    • Fan (范) is a species of aquatic insect, Wu (无) means "without" and Jiu (咎) means "blame".
      • There are other versions of the myth that refer to Wujiu as 无救, meaning "helpless" or "unsavable".
  • Their Appearance mostly references Yin and Yang, a concept of dualism, describing how obviously opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another.
    • White Guard/Xie Bi'an represents Yin, while Black Guard/Fan Wujiu represents Yang.
  • Their Character Day is on the 15th day of the 7th month in the Chinese Lunar Calendar, making it a different day on the solar calendar each year. This day is the Chinese Ghost Festival.
    • September 2nd, 2020 (1st Character Day)
    • August 22nd, 2021 (2nd Character Day)
    • August 12th, 2022 (3rd Character Day)
    • August 30th, 2023 (4th Character Day)
    • August 18th, 2024 (Upcoming 5th Character Day)
  • According to the Official Identity V Museum, they are 260 cm tall (8'6).[9]
  • They are the first hunter to be more than one person, the others being Dream Witch & Her Followers, and The Will Brothers of The Breaking Wheel.
  • They appear in all three episodes of the stage play series produced in Japan. Xie was played by Kunishima Naoki, and Fan was played by Agata Goki. In the stage play, they cannot appear together in separate bodies, even when in the manor.
  • They are the only playable character to have showroom animations for their B-tier and C-tier Costumes, including their Original Costume.
