I've been a PT for over 20 years. I've seen a lot of things come and go. I have also honed my skills and become quite good at what I do. Still, there was this percentage of people who did not respond as well (or at all) to treatment. What this book does is help fill in that gap. It talks about the science of pain, and moves deeper into it on a neuro-physiological level. Just as exciting, if not more so it provides a framework for a clinician to help classify the patient. Classify a patient, and you are going to devise better and more precise treatment (akin to MDT - Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy). If you as a clinician recognize that for some patients it's more than just a mechanical issue, and you want to be a better and more well rounded clinician than this is the book for you.

One of the first texts that I have seen that cleanly deals with the different types and aspects of pain (neurogenic, central sensitization, ect). I would recommend this text to anyone that deals. With chronic or acute pain on a regular basis as a rehabilitation clinician.

I’ve dealt with pain for over 15 years. I’ve always “pushed through.” After many hours in rehab throughout the years, the latest car accident landed me in therapy at Shirley Ryan Ability Lab (RIC). One of my physical therapists explained the pain mechanism using the 6 areas discussed in the book (3 related to body and 3 related to mind). This book has helped me understand pain in a logical, analytical and quantifiable way. I especially appreciate how the text is written in a manner that is useful for both clinicians and patients!
