Last Hours, Moments and Words of George Harrison – The Beatles

Last Hours, Moments and Words of George Harrison

Last Days , Hours and Moments of George Harrison

George, 58, had been told on or about November 14 that it was unlikely he could survive another month. After being treated for lung and throat cancer, he had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. On Saturday, November 17, it was decided that he would leave the New York hospital as the De Becker plan was put into operation.

On Saturday, November 17, George was told by doctors that he could be taken from New York. With no publicity he boarded a private jet to LA’s small Santa Monica airport. From there he entered UCLA Medical Centre, just as planned.

On Tuesday as Harrison’s condition deteriorated, he was taken to Beverly Hills in a closed, unmarked ambulance. For the next 36 hours, Harrison drifted in and out of consciousness. Olivia and Dhani maintained a constant vigil. The only ‘outsider’ allowed to visit was his great friend Ravi Shankar who played gentle sitar music. An intravenous drip fed glucose into George’s body. Occasionally he took sips from a liquid diamorphine drink.

The end came at 1.30 pm on Thursday Los Angeles time-9.30pm in Britain. His two best friends from the Krishna faith, Shayam Sundara and Mukunda, who George has known for more than 30 years, were said to be chanting quietly into their meditation beads as he passed away.

At 10.30pm in LA, by now 6.30 on Friday morning in Britain, George had been cremated. In a Hare Krishna funeral service George’s simple wood coffin was sprinkled with rose petals, and the air was filled with essence of sandalwood. There were no hymns. A Hare Krishna priest read from the Bhagavad-Gita, a series of sacred Hindu verses. Krishna expert Radha Mohan explained: “The body has always been cremated as soon as possible in India and the ashes scattered on a sacred river. It is beneficial for the soul on its eternal journey.”

According to Shankar, George positioned two pictures of Hindu gods Krishna and Rama around his bed, and he chanted the Krishna mantra. Two more of George’s close friends from the Krishna faith, Shayam Sundara and Mukunda, were there chanting quietly into their meditation beads, while George passed away at 1:20 p.m. on the 29th of November, 2001.

He was 58 years old.

At midnight in LA, 8 am in London, news of his death was released. By this time a plane was in the air with Olivia, Dhani and George’s ashes. It was the same Learjet that had flown George from New York. De Becker had secured the 10 hours of space and private time that the family needed.

Anoushka Shankar rushed to L.A. with her father, Ravi, 81, Harrison’s Indian music mentor, to spend the day with her “Uncle George.” “He had a look that I’d never really seen before, so full of love and peace,” Shankar, 20, told the magazine. “He wasn’t able to say anything with his lips, but his eyes were saying it. That house was just so full of love.”

Paul McCartney Tells His Last Moments With George Harrison

“I sat with him for a few hours when he was in treatment just outside New York,” said McCartney. “He was about 10 days away from his death, as I recall. We joked about things – just amusing, nutty stuff. It was good. It was like we were dreaming. He was my little baby brother, almost, because I’d known him that long.”

“We held hands. It’s funny, even at the height of our friendship – as guys – you would never hold hands. It just wasn’t a Liverpool thing. But it was lovely.”

At a Manhattan hotel room, Paul McCartneyand Ringo Starr joined their ill bandmate George Harrison for the last time on November 12, 2001.

There were some tears – but there was more laughter than anything else.”

George’s doctor Gil Lederman also sat in on part of the historic meeting.

He said: “It was a spirited affair, not a sombre one.

“There were lots of laughs and lots of fun. They spent hours reminiscing.

“For me, it was a unique phenomenon to be there. The whole experience was an incredible one. These were the icons of my life – some of the most important people of the 20th century.

“There were tears, but George remained very much the man of dignity.

“At the end, after both Paul and Ringo had left, he was fine and calm. He was a very happy man. This meeting meant so much to him.”

The three Beatles met for lunch on Monday, November 12 – just 17 days before George lost his ongoing battle with throat cancer.

Paul was the first to arrive after flying in from London with fiancee Heather Mills. Drummer Ringo drove to George’s apartment from a hotel nearby after jetting in a few days earlier. Frail George, 58, who was on medication, ate a vegetarian meal and drank only water.

But the old friends laughed and chuckled throughout the 90-minute lunch.

Then just before Ringo said he had to go, George’s family and other friends retired to leave the three music legends alone together for the last time.

Paul’s friend said: “Over the years they’d all had their differences, but all those disagreements were tossed aside as they realised just how much they meant to each other.

“Paul always remembers that George and he spent their first meeting laughing at each other’s jokes – and it was appropriate that their last moments together were the same. With Ringo there, feelings ran high and all three had so much to say to each other. They just chatted and chatted – and it was George who set the tone with his humour. He had them all in fits of laughter. He may have been close to death, but he refused to let that defeat his great sense of humour.”

George left after lunch for his treatment at Staten Island University Hospital. But Paul – who called the Beatles’ lead guitarist his “baby brother” – insisted on staying until he returned.

He spent the rest of the day with him and his wife Olivia, cherishing their last moments together.

Paul’s friend said: “Paul did say to George and Ringo that he regarded them as his brothers and his true family.”

As they talked about the Beatles’ early days in Hamburg and their experiments with drugs and religion, “you could feel the warmth between them”.

The pal added: “George was clearly picked up by the afternoon. He was smiling, happy and seemed so delighted to see his friends.

“Deep down he knew this was their last moments together and realised just what a great life they had together.

“Of course there were tears, but that was during the goodbyes.

“For the most part George, Paul and Ringo forgot about his condition and all seemed to carry on as if they hadn’t been apart from each other for 30 years.”

One of the high points was George’s recollection of losing his virginity in a Hamburg hotel while the other Beatles slept in bunk beds next to him.

They then cheered and clapped after he finished making love to a stunning blonde teenager. The friend said: “The story still makes them all laugh today.

“And that was the abiding emotion of the day – laughter and happiness. It was a wonderful day for George.

  1. Faithful to his false gods until the end. Religion is worse than heroin.

  2. Big ol beatles fan

    I’m crying sm

    • During Beatlemania, George wrote his mother and told her not to worry
Or believe all written about him and his Indian experiences. “I will never stray far from the sacred heart” once a Catholic, always a Catholic. GEORGE saw GOD in all things, he found an inner peace in all religions, he was intelligent, curious and knew there was only One GOD for all of us
GEORGE Harrison was an inspiration to all of us, so blessed he was here to give us such marvelous music.

  3. George was a lovely spiritual man slightley contradictory, not wanting material things, yet had a 120 room mansion and expesve cars, cant quite work that one out. But apart from the double standard issue i liked how he thought about our being and what was important in life was where we go when we die, alot of everthing thing else ie worldley really is very shallow and rubbish quite frankley. May your spirit have found your true home george. God bless you.

  4. I really liked george i agree with his way of spiritual thinking , ie the big question and the only one is what happens to us when we die, nothing else really matters if you think about it. He lived in a 140 mansion and had array of expesive cars roller, mercs and sports etc, this is the only thing what does not tally with me , nor does it really add up as he always said he was not materalistic and this was worldly and he was spiritual, so dont quite get his owning of the above. but i do like him an his music, but my pet hate in life is double standards, and hypocrocy im afraid.

  5. when i say 140 i mean his mansion had 140 rooms estate ? not inkeeping i have to say with his philosophy really.

  6. A lovely spiritual man?? He financed a movie that mocked Jesus Christ and the Christian faith. Regardless of what anyone thinks of Christianity, a “Lovely spiritual person” does not do things like that. Then he spent years dealing with drug substance abuse because of a sub-par solo career and gave a puny 2k a month for his sister that he was supposedly ” very close to” to live on when he was living in a mansion as a multi millionaire. Yeah, real lovely spiritual man… And then most tragic of all, he died chanting to his false hindu god statutes. I liked his the Beatles music but come on..you mindless ” Beatles can do no wrong” fans are so mislead when it comes to how “great” these guys are. Pathetic.

    • Thomas Cunningham

A load of road apples strewn about.
      George was an awesome individual.
The negativity matters only to the unhappy and incredibly stupid individuals who have a whole lot of work to do regarding spiritual growth!
Rest In Peace George and thank you for all the great music! ❤️

    • Wow, I never knew about the movie… But I have gotten into more than one argument over his song my sweet Lord with fellow christians some that have actually sang that song with their church choir not knowing the true meaning behind it. In an interview George said he was hoping that would happen… Christians would sing along not realizing they are singing Hare Krisna.Just because it says Hallelujah doesn’t mean hes singing about the God of Abraham…. He wasn’t my favorite beatle but I do like a couple of his songs not enough to excuse the Hindism or to follow in his footsteps. But, if God gives us the free will to choose our path, then that’s George’s right to choose Hinduism.

      • He was very aware that there’s one God, and he has many names.
In my Sweet Lord he sings “Hallelujah”, it means “praise the Lord”.

You must “pea nuts”, if you can’t get that names, peoples and times shall vary, but there’ll be One that stays.

Anyone who doesn’t question the nature of their faith on a regular basis, is just a zombie.

    • Your words don’t really carry any weight. You pray to an imaginary man in the sky. Stop being such a coward, accept that you’re going to die, and grow up.

  7. He was a spiritual man, not a Christian…. God could be larger than one religion. And I don’t think that the movie mocked Christ at all…. It did mock those who call themselves Christians. Perhaps some of the Christians (such as myself) who watched the entire film agree with me.

  8. I am not influenced by any religious or spiritual following that the Beatles may have had, they were, for me at least, the best group in the history of my life. I have played guitar for over 60yrs, in and out of a few con,± without making others unhappy. I’m sure that George, with without the Beatles, made millions of people happy. If indeed there is somewhere to go when we die,I think George may find it.

  9. Anne Shelly,do you checkout all of your friends lifestyles and philosophy, and if they don’t meet your standards, then what. Just look at the rock n roll stars of the fifties, quite a few were ex jailbirds and hell raisers, but great entertainers, and if you want an all time great hypocrite, look up what the late great Christopher Hitchens says with authority, about Mother Theresa.

  10. Anyone disrespecting George Harrison choice of his religion is a pathetic excuse for a human being. You should not even be on a topic related to George Harrison. If he was still alive and wasn’t like everyone else he would despice you. But we all know George didn’t give a shit, everything was important to him but nothing really mattered. Shame on yourself, sitting here and writing shit about a man you could never compare yourself to. You would not even account for 1/8th of the man he was. I usually don’t respond to bullshit like this. But sometimes messages have to be conveyed. Get out of here please stop spreading hate. George never forgot his Christian roots he wouldn’t have made My Sweet Lord if he did. You can call more than one GOD and it’s okay. It’s whatever you want to do. Come on we are bigger than this.

  13. Beatles don’t die, they play on.

  14. Like the rest of us George was a work in progress . As time went by his views modified and they would likely have modified further had he lived but I think what he was grasping at was the fundamental essence of the spirit or soul, the very core of our being, whether we are humanoid , an animal or any other sentient form, and as I see it that essence is energy. In physics we learnt that energy cannot be destroyed, it can be modified yes , but it cannot be destroyed, and I believe that our own energy or soul if you like, passes out into the universe after death, in what type or form I have no idea , but for better or worse the universe becomes the ‘God Head’ if you like, one great pool of positive and negative energy. And I further believe that you can make contact in your mind with that energy source. But be careful , there may well be positive and negative energy out there and I imagine contact with either is possible if you desire it .

    • this is the oldest, most negative, most crackerish comment section i have ever seen. everyone here ( and now im included) is the spiritual equivalent of a flacid penis. May we all die horrible painful deaths.
