Product Description
Wonder Wheel tells the story of four characters whose lives intertwine amid the hustle and bustle of the Coney Island amusement park in the 1950s: Ginny (Kate Winslet), a melancholy, emotionally volatile former actress now working as a waitress in a clam house; Humpty (Jim Belushi), Ginny's rough-hewn carousel operator husband; Mickey (Justin Timberlake), a handsome young life-guard who dreams of becoming a playwright; and Carolina (Juno Temple), Humpty's long-estranged daughter, who is now hiding out from gangsters at her father's apartment. Poetically photographed by Vittorio Storaro, Wonder Wheel is a powerful dramatic tale of passion, violence, and betrayal that plays out against the picturesque tableau of 1950s Coney Island.

Wonder Wheel, a 2017 movie by Amazon, proved to be an evening of fine entertainment.
Woody Allen wrote and directed film that depicts life along New York's famed Coney Island in the early 1950's. It has four central characters, and in true Woody Allen style, the movie offers a very introspective look into their lives as they tangle and then unwind.
Justin Timberlake plays Mickey, a hunky lifeguard whose entry into college was aborted by the outbreak of World War II. Now a Navy veteran who has traveled the world, Mickey is back in New York and enrolled in college where he hopes to develop the skills and insight to become a successful playwright. Mickey, in true Woody Allen fashion, narrates this tragic tale.
Ginny (Kate Winslet) is a waitress who works down the beach at Ruby's Clam House. A few years earlier she had been rescued from a bad marriage by Humpty (Jim Belushi), one of the operators of the carousel at the beach. Humpty has provided a home and stability to Ginny and her budding adolescent son who is a chronic fire-starter. Ginny, an ex-actress of minor repute, is growing bored with her life and feels that she is just "playing the part" of a waitress. She is rescued from the malaise of middle age when she meets Mickey the lifeguard and begins a torrid affair during the few brief moments that they can arrange to be together.
At that point (and actually the first scene of the movie) Carolina (Juno Temple) makes her appearance at Coney Island. She is Humpty's adult daughter whose life had been sidetracked several years earlier when she gave up the idea of going to college in order to marry a mobster. Eventually that life unraveled, and she gave evidence against the mob to prosecutors. Now she has come to Coney Island, penniless, to hide out with her father.
And then one day while walking down the street, Ginny and Carolina, run into Mickey, and Ginny reluctantly introduces the two young people - and Woody Allen goes full Shakespeare - and stars begin to cross!
Mickey, who is out to experience life and has been "around the world," is immediately captivated by this blond sprite who has been "around the block."
There is no way that it will end well.
Wonder Wheel is a magical excursion to Coney Island as it was back in the day. Woody Allen has captured the fun and intrigue of a place that was undoubtedly part of his misspent youth, and he distills those memories into a cinematic masterpiece - along with a soundtrack that tugs at the heartstrings of those of us of a certain age. The story is compelling, and the cast amazing.
Overall, it was an evening well spent.
So much could have been done with this story to make it really good and really interesting, but just about every scene was not followed through.
The little boy starts fires, but nothing happens from that. There could have been some interesting scenes with the psychiatrist, but we don't get to see what happens inside of the psychiatrist's office. We can pretty much guess why the little boy starts fires, but the movie never really addresses it. There could have been some scenes where he really does damage, such as burning down a building or injuring someone or killing someone, but absolutely nothing happens with his fire starting. There were several scenes here that were not followed through.
Kate cheats on her husband, but he never suspects anything, and at the end, he never finds out. There could have been a lot of interesting scenes of him finding out, how he finds out (maybe he catches her), what he does about it, or even if he confronts the lover. Kate never seems to worry about her husband catching her and she shows no guilt.
So much more could have been done with the husband's character - - all that he did was was go fishing and get drunk and was clueless to everything around him - - I felt sorry for him because he didn't know that he was being cheated on and he really cared about his daughter who didn't deserve his caring.
I didn't feel sorry for any of the other characters because they all were hurting each other and deserved whatever they got.
Justin falling in love with either Juno or Kate was ridiculous. Neither woman could barely put a sentence together, but he was in college. Wouldn't he want something more interesting in a relationship? What was Justin's attraction to either Kate or Juno? Just sex? He was a lifeguard on a beach, so he could have flirted with so many pretty women in bikinis, that I can't imagine him choosing either of these women when he had so many others to choose from - - women who weren't morons and crazy and dangerous. Maybe that was the attraction - - Justin liked the danger - - one woman is married to a man who drinks and hits her when he drinks, and the other woman has escaped from gangsters who are looking for her with the goal of killing her - - I guess he found all of this possible danger more interesting than the other "boring" women on the beach. There were no scenes with any of the women on the beach even trying to flirt with him, or him even looking at any of them. Justin never showed any guilt or worry or fear - - either the husband or the gangsters could have killed him.
At the end, we assume that Juno is taken by the gangsters. But we don't know for sure. She could have escaped from them. They could have let her go. They could have taken her back to her husband. They could have killed her. But we never see any scenes regarding this, which could have been very interesting.
All of these characters needed more depth, more background story, more dialogue.
It was ridiculous to have this movie take place in Brooklyn when absolutely no one had a Brooklyn accent.
This movie takes place in the 1950s, but there was very little to make the audience feel that time period.
The characters could have discussed things about the 1950s that would have interested people today.
And, the music was clearly from a much earlier time.
I hated the ending. It just left us hanging. We can assume that Justin is done with Kate, but we don't know if they will pick up their affair again. We can assume that Juno is dead, but we don't know. We can assume that the little boy will continue to set fires, bigger each time, until something tragic happens from that, but again, we don't know.

EDITION DVD / BLU-RAY AB VIDEO 2018
