Just because this collection doesn't have a bunch of "hits" don't go thinking that the tunes are inferior. Far from it. As another reviewer noted, Irma's 1970s output is arguably better than the material she did in the 1960s. One reason for the lack of chart success for these excellent songs was due to financial and distribution problems with the label. Same old story.
The first 9 tracks on this collection are basically the "In Between Tears" album from 1973, with one song missing. That album was produced by Swamp Dogg (Jerry Williams, Jr.) and oozes a delicious deep southern soul vibe. Williams/Swamp Dogg also write 8 of those 9 tracks, and I think the material is of very good quality. I would politely disagree with the reviewer who didn't think these tunes suit Irma's style; I think they're a very good fit and sound great.
The other songs on here are a mixed bag from sessions cut in 1970 and at the end of the decade, 1978-79. Some great tunes amongst them, including a couple of Dan Penn-penned gems. Two tracks from the later period exude a definite disco vibe, but with Irma singing them they still sound mighty fine. She has such a great voice, that even less-than-stellar material is still worth hearing.
All in all, another very satisfying reissue from the dedicated folks at Kent/Ace. Along with this CD you get a nice booklet with informative liner notes from Tony Rounce. Over 65 minutes of sweet soul music.
