From Windward School
Windward School was founded in 1971 to provide a dynamic education in a nurturing community for co-ed students in Grades 7-12 in Los Angeles. The School is named for Shirley Windward, who used her public school system pension to open the college preparatory school. That innovative spirit continues to thrive at Windward, where students are supported by dedicated faculty members and encouraged to pursue their interests while developing 21st century skills in state of the art facilities. Community and collaboration are at the core of the School's philosophy and are reflected in the welcoming atmosphere.

Windward does an incredible job of working across two spectrums: 1) nurturing and challenging and 2) encouraging exploration and excellence. The first one talks to academics. Students are pushed to learn and grow at an advanced pace while providing lots of support mechanisms in the form of peer tutors, counselors and other help to allow students to reach their potential. The overall class size is small and the administration personally knows each student. They are encouraged to self advocate and talk through issues directly with teachers who help them come up with plans to improve if needed. This means Windward has as much rigor as other schools while ensuring students have access to all resources to succeed. The second spectrum applies to sports and activities where students are encouraged to try as many sports and clubs as they'd like with participation greatly encouraged. At the same time, the school can also provide real depth in chosen areas of interest.
As a new family we were looking forward to joining the Windward community this year. Now as we come to the end of it excited doesn't even begin to cover our feelings. This year at Windward has been all things positive: inclusion, delight, reaches, fun, stamina, kindness..... and the list goes on.
For a 7th grade girl and for us as parents it was such a pleasure. Thank you Windward and here's to 8th grade!

My elementary and secondary years were at predominantly white schools. They were spaces where my dual – maybe even triple! – identity was obvious, and where I learned to navigate my status. I was a living testament to the diversity that shaped me. I also learned how important it was to understand different perspectives. As I grew older, my family seemed especially willing to have me learn about my connection to the Chihene Nde nation’s rich past and vibrant present. I immersed myself in my indigenous family history.
Truth be heard since I was a multiethnic minority in a largely white environment, it could have been simpler to assimilate. Instead, I accepted my standing out as a gift and advocated for often-overlooked voices and cultures.
As I move forward to University I’m determined to stay the course, foster inclusivity, and advance multicultural understanding. I know how it feels to be an underrepresented multiethnic and multiracial minority and use it as a force for good.
