Drawing largely from Patrick O'Hearn's early solo work (particularly "Ancient Dreams" and "Between Two Worlds"), this collection presents many of the finest compositions by the New Age/ambient multi-instrumentalist, whose resume features stints as a bassist with Frank Zappa and Missing Persons. Highlights of this atmospheric compilation include the exotic "Life Along the River Vaal" and the serene "First Light," which show the influence of both world music and '80s New Wave.

Patrick O’Hearn isn’t exactly a name you associate with Windham Hill. Nonetheless, the talented bassist and composer fits very well with that iconic record label. Of course, as fans know, O’Hearn is almost impossible to pin down and trying to peg him as New Age or Jazz or New Wave simply doesn’t work. Just like any greatest hits collection, you can make the case some tracks should have been included while others left off. Despite that, this is a fine collection and a good introduction to his work. The album captures his many sides and offers enough change-ups that even listeners familiar with his music will be caught off guard (as I am when the album moves from “Espana” to “Sky Juice” for example). A good introduction to O’Hearn’s early work. Highly recommended.
This is a very good sampler of the meistro of New Age. The best songs on here are the techno space oriented Sky Juice, the misty Subtle Persuation, and the songs off the Indigo album. Good thing they also included the beautiful At First Light on here as well. I once heard that Patrick Ohearn sued dance artist Robert Miles for his hit Children because it sampled the chord structure of At First Light. While I like the song Children alot, At First Light though will remain superior to Children. Sorry Mr. Miles but Patrick O'Hearn rules! My favorite song though on this sampler CD is the space groove 87 Dreams Of A Lifetime from the Between Two Worlds. Unfortunately I have to lop off a star from my rating for this CD because it should have included Downhill Racer, Irene, and Step from the Private Music Collection. And it doesn't have any songs off the Trust and Metaphor CDs either. Oh Well. This is a good sampler from my favorite New Age musician but if you fan find it get the Private Music Collection CD for Downhill Racer, Irene, and Step.
