Visited the Winchester Mystery House today and learned that some of the stained glass windows have uranium glass in them! So of course I broke out my light and showed everyone how they glow.
🤩🤩🤩🤩 You visited there? I'm so jealous!
It’s definitely been a bucket list item! It is SO COOL! If you’re into any kind of Victorian history, it’s worth the visit if you’re in the area. I had a day off from work today so I drove over there. Also, get the Walk with Spirits Tour because you get to see some areas that aren’t on the mansion tour!
I'm currently on vacation in Galveston, TX, and I'm taking an all-access tour of Moody Mansion tomorrow 🤩
I just looked that up and wow! What a gorgeous building!
I'm super excited 😊😊
I hope from now on that the tour guides carry a black light flashlight to show people the trick of the glowing glass that's so cool that you did that.
Very cool! I used to be one of the more senior guides there, and I didn't even realize that.
I was a guide myself! Also worked as gardener and housekeeper 😊 The glass in the house is probably my favorite part closely followed by the inlaid floors and the Lincrusta wall coverings. When I was at the house we had a disgruntled tour guide throw a brick through one of the front windows by the front doors. Absolutely made me sick that instead of talking with managers to try to resolve the issue they felt they had to destroy something so beautiful and full of history. Luckily we had a great restoration guy who used old glass from salvaged windows to repair the damage. We would tell employees that if they could find the repairs to the windows they would get a years salary. No one ever could! Shortly afterwards plexiglass was put up on the outside of the stained glass to give them extra protection. When were you at the house as a guide?😊
I was there 2012-2015. What about you?
I was there early to mid-1980’s. Weird to think that’s 40 some odd years ago 😳😳😳 To be honest, if I were still in California I’d be back at the house working part time or whatever just because I can’t seem to stay away… ♥️
It was a fun little job for a while. Really interesting, although occasionally really frustrating. My wife and I were dealing with some elder care stuff at the time, and I needed something that didn't involve the sort of 24/7 chaos and long commute that my previous job did.
I came into it with a history degree, so after a while they let me off leash a bit and I ended up doing a lot of weird little research projects. Sadly the owners really wouldn't let us update the mansion script. They were afraid of people pointing out that XYZ had changed, so corrections were out as well as interesting discoveries. I did get to briefly appear on MTV as an extra, and I was awkwardly interviewed for a French travel show, so there were some perks :)
Had they started the "Behind the Scenes" tour when you were there?
I went there when I was 9 (1999). I’m so nervous to ever go back, always figured it can’t possibly be as magical as it felt when I was little. This post has absolutely changed my mind.
It is absolutely magical. I was in awe the entire time. My pictures aren’t the best because I was taking tons of pics of the windows and the glare is bad because I went in the morning but I’m so glad I went.
Awesome! I went there before I started collecting UG, so I didn’t know this detail. Now I want to go back lol
Oh how cool!! My family lives near there so I go every time I fly in to San Jose, but the guides never mentioned any of it being uranium glass - that would make sense though, I never thought of it
add to bucket list
So cool!!
Neat!
