Giro vs. Smith helmet

Strongly considering a giro ledge MIPS helmet on evo.com for just over $100. I’ve been going back and forth between this giro helmet and some Smith helmets for around the same price. Any big reasons why should lean one way or another. If not, let me know some of your personal opinions on the helmets.

I’d say try them on. I tried some from both brands and the fits were different. I went with the smith only because it fit my head shape a little better, no reason beyond that.

I have a big head, so take it with a grain of salt - I have both branded helmets, the Giro feels much better, the Smith feels much safer. The Smith is clunkier too.

Tbh both are good helmets

tbh you don't need a helmet

Sonny Bono would disagree

oh other ppl might benefit, i'm just saying you probably don't need one

It’s a shame you won’t be around to receive your Darwin award

I’ve never tried Giro, so can’t speak to that, but I love smith and they have a Black Friday sale on right now. This will be my third smith helmet and I was stoked to get it on sale

I got Smith MIPS mission ! Very warm and tugged , but I highly recommend go in store to try itb

Either measure your head with a tape measure & confirm the size or if you’re in between sizes look for one with a dial adjuster at the back. My smith Mission MIPS has one and even tho I’m in between S & M sizes, the S with the adjuster really helped to keep a snug fit at the loosest setting. If in doubt, go to a nearby store and try them on!

Although MIPS is safer I prefer the feeling of a regular helmet.

Important things to look for in a helmet is fit and compatibility with your goggle. Some helmets have a cable dial (BOA) system which can really dial in your fit. MIPS is relatively new (past 10 years or so) and a game changer in helmet protection against rotational forces. Giro and Smith both make some highly rated MIPS helmets, but they fit slightly different. Smith uses a proprietary honeycomb material on their higher end helmets which allows impact protection while remaining lightweight and breathable. Ignore the people saying a helmet isn’t necessary. I’ve had serious head injuries while wearing a MIPS helmet and have no doubt in my mind that my helmet saved my life.
