Product Description

Eva (Shirley MacLaine), a widow and retired history teacher, enjoys a quiet life in the tiny town of Liberty, Ohio. Everything changes when Eva receives a life insurance check accidentally made out for $5,000,000 instead of the expected $50,000. At the not-so-gentle urging of her best friend Maddie (Jessica Lange), Eva deposits the money and takes the chance it offers them to escape from small town life. Their destination is Gran Canaria and they have every intention of living it up. But their fantasy is short-lived when they awake to discover that they have become media sensations overnight and fugitives from justice, forced to outwit a trio of conmen, outmaneuver a dogged insurance agent Vespucci (Howard Hesseman) who has teamed up with Eva's daughter, Crystal (Demi Moore), and outrun the law. Surprised at a 5 star rating? I read Shirley's book Above the Line first and knew all of the behind the scenes drama. So to see how it was pulled off anyway, despite no money and sweltering heat, I decided to watch Wild Oats. I think actresses who defer salaries, crews who work for scale and writers and a director working only for a vacation is saying a lot. All of those people wanted to be there, wanted to be together at that particular time in their lives. Knowing that, caused a lot of interest on my part. I also noticed things that Shirley did not mention in her book, things that Jessica Lange did, as an actress hard me sitting up straight and paying attention. I watched it twice. Yes, Demi Moore was most forgettable in this role, but she needed to do that. For herself. She needed to get back into being in front of the cameras, she doesn't need the money, but is smart enough to know that staying busy and staying interested and involved keeps one out of trouble. Hooray for her! Look past some of the dumber lines at the end, easy to do as the movie moves very quickly. But this is a movie where the book does not spoil anything for viewers. Buy it. It's not at all bad.

I honestly wanted to like this movie. But in my opinion, it was like a bad tiktok that made no sense. I'm glad I listened to Shirley's version of the whole debacle. As usual, she assed the problem in making the movie. I was even disappointed by Shirley changing her old stories. In Out on a Limb, she said the book fell off the shelf at the Bodhi Tree Bookstore which was in California. Yet in this story Wild Oats, she claims that even happened in Africa. I trust that her mind is still sharp. Surely she has not fallen victim to age like ordinary mortals we all know and love. All I can say is that Shirley still looks pretty at dinner.

Wow! This film was a wonderful comedy (and somewhat of a romance) that is enjoyable for adults of all ages. Shirley McLain and Jessica Lange were superb in their roles, and I think it's true that comedy is harder to portray than drama. Note, that the movie was neither a slapstick comedy nor sexy romance. It had moments of both, some of which were subtle, others more overt. So the major elements of the film were for the true connoisseurs of romance and comedy. Overall, the plot was great! It had lots of interesting twists and turns along with enough predictability to let you feel good about guessing the fun/positive ways in which it will end. The best part about this movie is that is starred older women! How incredibly refreshing! Not every event in life happens to 20 or 30 somethings, and how great to see examples of that on the big screen. This movie was so enjoyable! I can't say enough good things about it!

Great! Two elderly women decide to make a Thelma and Louise type run for the last Tango. Both wind up getting laid, which isn't all that believable with Shirley McClain (sorry, Shirley, but I know your age) and is slightly more believable with Jessica Lange, but then again, I always thought Sam Shepard was one lucky dude. Shirley's husband died, leaving her fifty thousand in a life insurance policy, which the lazy insurance company made into $5M on her check. She tried to call them for a full day, but kept getting an automated voice. So she did what I was hollering for her to do: she cashed it. Somehow, God knows how because the movie doesn't show it, she winds up with the insurance imbecile given the task to chase her down and intimidate her into coming home. There are con artists galore. The only thing that saves Shirley is that she taught school for thirty years and it seems her old students--getting old and fat themselves--were everywhere. It's worth watching for the fun factor.
