Whoopi Goldberg took a somber trip down memory lane on this morning’s episode of The View, sharing new details about her frightening hospital stay a few years ago.

Goldberg, who was diagnosed with both pneumonia and sepsis back in 2019, was placed in the hospital and missed The View for weeks as she fought to gain back her health and strength. Now, years later, she’s revealing how her co-hosts handled the scary moment. Spoiler alert: not too well.

“A series of the ladies, when I got sick a couple of years ago, came to see me in the hospital. And they were sitting like this,” she explained, before fixing her features into a mesmerized stare for the audience.

Sunny Hostin immediately claimed responsibility when she chimed in, “I know I looked terrible, Whoopi. I am so sorry about that.”

Goldberg leaned in to the bit, joking, “They were looking at me like I was a pork chop!” but Hostin said that in her defense, she was pretty freaked out by the scene.

“I was one of the first people that showed up, and then I called everybody: ‘Whoopi is really sick. You gotta go see her!'” she said.

Ana Navarro shared her own memory, telling Hostin, “You were in the hospital for a month, and you were gray.”

Goldberg dropped a big bomb them, admitting, “Well, I was dying. That’s part of it.”

“I told you guys, ‘Don’t panic. They’re working to fix it,'” she continued. “I did not do what I was supposed to do. I should have taken better care and recognized when something was wrong. But you can’t panic people, because if you panic the person, they’re not gonna tell you anything.”

Goldberg has had her fair share of health battles in the past, and has always been candid about her struggles. Shortly after returning to the show following her recovery from pneumonia and sepsis, she was admitted to the hospital again for  “a 24-hour bug.”

In June 2021, she missed The View again, this time for landing in the hospital for sciatica pain. In classic Goldberg fashion, she found a way to make light of the condition, telling viewers it was like having a “bad boyfriend” who returned to “mess with me.”

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
