A killer comedy!

After young playwright, David Shayne obtains funding for his play from gangster Nick Valenti, Nick's girlfriend Olive miraculously lands the role of a psychiatrist—but not only is she a bimbo who could never pass for a psychiatrist—she's a dreadful actress. David puts up with the leading man who is a compulsive eater, the grand dame who wants her part jazzed up, and Olive's interfering hitman/bodyguard—but, eventually he must decide whether art or life is more important.

One of the Woody Allen movies I watched not for the controversial filmmaker himself, but for one of the actors. In viewing "Running Scared," I became curious about where I knew Chazz Palminteri from, which led me to find this movie. The fact that it was nominated for an Oscar and is considered one of Allen's best works prompted me to finally see it.
In fact, it is one of the director's best comedies. While the director's style fits the time period, it never feels like a gimmick. Bullets Over Broadway may have felt a little too similar to something like Sunset Boulevard, but that doesn’t stop it from being an enjoyable, well-acted, and stylish dramedy. It’s all about show business, specifically the stage, and a group of people having to create a play with a talentless woman and an old star. The story becomes more of a mess when the writer realizes that his script isn’t great, and he is in love with one of the actresses.
The best part of this is Dianne Wiest. Her character, performance, look - it’s all fantastic. Her character really reminded me of Norma Desmond, but she definitely had enough originality…

Bullets Over Broadway is pure delight. It has the pitch-perfect mix of a delightfully amusing ensemble, snappy dialogue, a complex storyline, and energy to make it a highly enjoyable comedy. The gleaming and dazzling camera work captures the essence of 1920s New York, simultaneously making this a realistic and exhilarating cinematic experience. Above all else, this is a zippy, strange, and beautiful spoof on theater and show business.
The first part of this movie could not have been more turbulent, intriguing, or thrilling. Hard to say Tilly has a thankless role when she got an Oscar nomination for it; she’s the missing link between Angelica Huston in Crimes and Misdemeanours and Juno Temple in Wonder Wheel - another loud , inconvenient, doomed woman whose disappearance both becalms and unsettles the existential order. (Same with ScarJo in Match Point, etc). This time, the point - such as it is - is that a good piece of art is more valuable, and less expendable, than an annoying person, and Allen, forever dreaming of the perfect murder (he should remake ROPE before he dies, maybe with the Red Scare as gender flipped Leopold and Loeb) puts it across with a light touch. Very good cast, minus Cusack, who’s lost; they should have just gone with John Turturro in Barton Fink drag since he’s obviously the inspiration for the role

It was a blast to watch all these great performers just nail every little comedic beat and watch it all unfold in long takes. I’d probably say I’m someone who is a little behind the hype train when it comes to Manhattan/Annie Hall so I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this.

This was way more fun than I expected. Fantastic ensemble, great dialogues and a good story. Bullets Over Broadway is probably Woody Allen's most underrated work. Dianne Wiest won an Oscar for her performance and it was deserved, her character was pretty similar to Norma Desmond.

Woody Allen makes a gangster movie. On the surface, Woody Allen's jazz-age comedy-drama seems to be a retelling of the old Faust myth. Playwright David Shayne (john Cusack) has the chance to have his latest play performed on Broadway. The catch is that the funding is coming from a local mob boss under the condition that his moll, aspiring actress Olive Neal (Jennifer Tilly) is given a part. This scenario seemed to me to be similar to Thomas Mann's novel Mephisto, also featuring a playwright, this time becoming enthralled by Goebbels and the Nazi regime.
Unexpectedly, the corrupting influence comes from a different source, and Shayne has to make the choice between integrity and acclaim. The Devil is there, but he's hiding in the details.
