Completed in 1939, Midtown's "city within a city," art deco crown jewel is enjoying a renaissance, with redesigned public spaces and some of the most talked-about restaurants in town.

The original idea behind Rockefeller Center was a very democratic one…to create a set of office buildings that helped create a deeply civic space.

At Rockefeller Center we see all the elements that give New York its character — the density, the grid, the crowds, the volume of the buildings and their incredible heights. All this has been emphasized, so we feel its power. At the same time it’s been controlled, so we can actually enjoy it. All the restaurant hounds I know are impressed that Tishman Speyer has caught most of these chefs and restaurateurs while they still have new things to say.

A wheel-friendly rink is opening in Midtown’s famous sunken plaza, part of a rebrand of the Art Deco complex to attract more New Yorkers.

The reconfiguration of the dining landscape in Rockefeller Center continues. On the near horizon, opening this spring, are Le Rock, a brasserie from Lee Hanson and Riad Nasr of Frenchette, in the former Brasserie Ruhlmann space, and Pebble Bar from the owners of Grand Army in Brooklyn.

Is midtown the new Brooklyn? Rough Trade NYC, the recently-closed Williamsburg music mecca for records, live events and concerts, announced today that they’d found an unexpected new home: 30 Rock. The new store is just under a quarter of the size of the Brooklyn location, but it’s still set to house 10,000 new vinyl records. It will be located at street level next to the subway station and The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Tishman Speyer CEO Rob Speyer today unveiled the firm's plans and timetable for the development of The Wheeler, a 10-story creative office hub to rise above Macy's historic department store in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn. With The Wheeler, a name inspired by the visionary 19th century Brooklyn developer Andrew Wheeler, Tishman Speyer is creating a 620,000 square-foot vertical office campus spread across 10 expansive floors.

Even as this year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas tree twinkles away for millions of delighted visitors, last year’s tree is still bringing joy — as the beams and flooring for two Habitat for Humanity homes in upstate New York. In anticipation of the big event, we decided to take a look back at how this tradition got started and how it has evolved over the years.

Last year, the old guard of the Real Estate Board of New York opted to give Rob Speyer, the president and chief executive officer of Tishman Speyer, a fourth year as the group’s chairman—breaking the traditional three-year mold. Now, the 46-year-old real estate scion will continue leading REBNY for even more uncommon fifth year. “I am honored to have been asked to extend my term as Chairman through 2017,” Speyer said in a statement via a spokesman provided to CO.

Rob Speyer is the President and Co-CEO of Tishman Speyer. Speyer also serves on a number of boards and committees, including as chairman of the advisory board of the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, and of the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY), to which he was appointed in 2012. A graduate of Columbia College, Rob Speyer has remained active with the college, serving on the Board of Visitors where he is now an emeritus member.
