Synopsis

Psychiatrist Neil Stanton, his wife, Kay, and their son, Timmy, are living on the French Riviera while Neil is on sabbatical. Neil's frequent lecture trips leave Kay lonely, and one day she and Timmy meet an American naval ensign, Mark. Kay and Mark soon become emotionally involved. When Kay decides to break off the relationship because she really does love Neil, they quarrel and Mark is shot accidentally. Panic-stricken, Kay enlists the aid of her worldly neighbor, Daphne, in dumping the apparently dead body into a ravine and then telephones the police anonymously to inform them of the location of the body, giving no other details. Some days later, curious that the incident has not been in the news, Kay returns to the ravine. Back at her home, Inspectors DeFargo and Albie visit her and ask about her involvement. Her response is unconvincing, and DeFargo persuades Neil to help an amnesia victim who is recovering from a gunshot wound; the man is, in fact, Mark. DeFargo hopes that Mark's exposure to Kay will restore his memory. Even after he finally regains his memory, however, Mark does not disclose the truth about what happened. He departs for the States; and Neil, though he surmises the truth, realizes that Kay truly loves him.
